Dug a old British navy anchor flat button today and it cleaned up better than expected. Lemon juice and toothbrush. Thanks for looking! [emoji2]

Wow that did clean up good. Almost looks museum quality. Congrats!!!

It's about the gilt left, and yours gives a nice contrast to the chocolate coloured brass

Very nice and she looks Great cleaned up, Congrats!!

That button cleaned up so well, it almost looks brand new.

What ironhorse said.
Nice one indeed.

Just thinking out loud here.. I wonder if one might be able to restore a button with no gilt left using gold leaf putting it back into the design element, giving that nice "contrast" you mention. I'm thinking it is quite sure possible.

I'm smelling what you're selling...lol
That may be a better question for a restorer although I've seen some buttons polished up down to the brass and sealed, ruined yes but the eye appeal wins.
Kiddo did it up as best as it can be, it was a righteous clean

Another great find I see you do very well I appreciate you always sharing your finds with us I bet you have some really nice display cases for your great finds keep it up Tommy

Love the button K1dd0, sure wish I could find more older ones here in Ohio.

I don't know why, but this instantly came to mind. ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1485215076.382676.webp

Wow..that cleaned up super nice. Do you often use that cleaning technique on buttons?

I do often but really only if evidence of any remaining gilt might still be there. In this case I had no idea if there was but because I seen the anchor I knew it was for sure worth a shot. It's cool when you see it start to appear and then start shinning bright. I usually just drip some lemon on as opposed to submerging it. The toothbrush speeds the process up a lot but got to be a bit more careful. I rinse it right of with water when I don't want to risk going any further. Here's a few random others I did before. As you can see sometimes there too far gone to be perfect but I still prefer seeing any gilt reappear than just a all dark button...
