Why is it that so many coins have a hole in them as if they were used as a pendant? Is it always because they were in fact used as pendants? I recently dug a corroded 1837 Canadian Half Penny that has a small hole at the top as if it was a pendant. I see alot of finds in the forums that seam to have these holes. Is this the only reason these holes were placed there? A recent post in the "best finds" forum about a "2 reale day" shows a reale with exactly the type of hole I mean. Thanks for any info.

They were also sometimes sewn into clothing, especially travellers and soldiers. You could carry a little extra cash without losing it or having it srolen.

US large cents were frequently nailed to the framework of new homes for good luck.

And (with tongue in cheek) I'm aware of at least one Spanish 8 Escudo doubloon, minted in Quito, Ecuador, between 1839 and 1843, that was nailed to a mast of a ship and given to a crewman as a reward for first spotting a particular whale.

When I was a kid, lots of women had bracelets with coins on them for all over so maybe that could account for some.

my first thought was drilled to be worn. secondly, i figured it`s easier to string them to keep them from being lost.
