Went out yesterday for a short hunt at one of my well pounded spots. I have been hunting this cow pasture for 20 years. There are three concentrations on this farm and it has given up some great finds including two Rattlesnake & Stars buttons, two 1840 Harrison campaign log cabin buttons, a 1767 Spanish coin facsimile button/cuff link, a Vermont copper, and a 2 reale cob which I found on Mother's Day last year. So looking for some more Mother's Day magic I returned yesterday and managed to recover this beautiful 1780s/90s Dandy button with an intricate design. This came from the main concentration where the rattlesnake buttons and most of the other good finds were made. I must have walked over this button 100 times, but conditions were perfect yesterday and the Deus sniffed her out.

I think your hole needs to be bigger :)

That's an awesome monster dandy! Great job!

Beautiful find! Love those really old, large dandy buttons!

BTB Hope they don't lose a calf down that hole. LOL :tongue3:

Sweet Dandy! Any back markings? The beauty of the hole you dug is that I don't see any roots. It would take me 30 min to dig a hole like that where I search!
The back is plain as is typical for buttons of this type. No roots are a fringe benefit of hunting in farm fields.

No chance of that. I replace all my plugs and tramp them down.

....Steve , what was the depth to that dandy AND what detector were you swinging ?
....Mark.
It was down about 10 inches and I was using an XP Deus. The signal wasn't crisp and sharp, but kind of weak and elongated. But this large button was missed by a lot of other detectors over the last 20 years. There are a lot of nails at this site.

Heck of a button. Thats better than a bust 1/2 or 1 reale in my book. Been a long time since I dug a Dandy so nice. Both the design and patina are excellent. My season is done unless I find a woods site so will be drooling over others finds. :occasion14:
I know what you mean. These buttons are unique to a limited time period and they have so much character. I've found far more Spanish silver than I have nice examples of these buttons.

That is a wide birth !!!!!! Sweet find!!!!!!!

Congratulations on the great looking button. It's always nice to get one that stands the test of time.
When in the fields the holes tend to be wide and deep. Shovel full of sod won't dry out if there's no rain.

I wasn't being critical I have found a wheat or silver coin and widened the hole and dug deeper and got a new signal that wasn't there after the first coin. Keep it up!!!!

I nominate the very large fox hole dug for a simple button as a BANNER. Vote banner for the well dug hole. OMG.

Thanks for the PM and further tongue in cheek offers to buy me a back hoe. The hole was perhaps 14" in diameter. IN A COW PASTURE. If you had any idea how bad the cows and the tractor have this place tore up you wouldn't be calling me out on my hole. I have been hunting this farm for 20 years. When I am NOT in a mowed lawn I dig bigger holes. But I don't need to justify my digging techniques to you or anyone else. I've been in this hobby since 1985 and I let my finds do the talking.

Great looking dandy, dig wide-dig deep when in the fields. ☺

I have a couple of big beautiful dandys and I value them much mire than most coins. We should start a thread and share our favorite designed dandies
