UPDATED PICS - LOCK SOLVED!

I really enjoy walking around this old mansion. Sometimes, I feel like I've walked over every single square inch of this place, at least twice. LOL Yet, I always, always, always find something interesting!

I've thought about this over and over. WHY?! I can't just be walking around all these hits! Then, today, I realized something. Everything is pretty much the same there. The grounds, the conditions, the detector and I've covered the gamut of weathers.

There is one thing that is different each time I go there, namely, me. I don't mean the good days and bad days we all have in this. I mean, "me". One thing that is different each time is my level of experience. I am better than the last time at discerning what my detector is telling me.

That's not by mistake. I try very hard to learn more about detecting every time I go out. It's worth the effort.

Just a word to the wise. ;) LOL

ANY-hoo, here's what I found on this walk.

I thought this was a rock at first.

2014 (196).webp
2014 (197).webp

When I turned it over, it had it's own bling! LOL
Actually, I'm thinking something melted with bits of glass in it.
(I'm assuming they're glass)

2014 (199).webp

Now, here's an interesting find. Or at least, combination find.
I got this very obvious quarter hit. Not a huge hit, typical short, solid hit, 85-89, repeatable.
Not a large or loud hit. I called it as a quarter, probably clad. Two inches down, there it was.
Rechecked the hole and there was something else below it.

2014 (198).webp

See that thing that Blingie is surfing on? THAT, was in the same hole as this quarter and I only read quarter
initially! LOL

2014 (201).webp
2014 (202).webp

I'm thinking andiron. :dontknow:

Then, there was this little gem to round out the day.

2014 (204).webp2014 (205).webp

I started cleaning a bit, just to see if there was a date. There is but I had
to figure out a way to take a picture that would show it. Didn't think y'all would believe it
if I couldn't get a pic. (LOL ;) )

Here's the best I could do.

2014 (203).webp

Combination of special lighting, a loupe, and zoom.
I won't say what I think this is, I'll let you tell me. :)

Sorry about the long post but, I sometimes don't know when to quit. ;)

Thanks for peeking!

That lock it sweet! Good condition too! 1904 indian right? ;) Just kiddin

Nice lock and Indian... can we see pics of the mansion, love old architecture :-)

Cool finds, it's cool when you can keep going back to the same spot and find interesting things and good stuff!!!

1878 is what it looks like to me. Nice lock! That thing Blingie is surfing on looks like something used to hold sheet music on the stand.
Sometimes I think the underground critters move things around on us!
I am really surprised you got just a quarter reading with that under it, maybe it is the same type of metals, but the detector should have screamed at you...maybe it was too busy laughing!
Still a lot of good finds at the mansion!

I think I found an old screw on razor handle, haven't quite figured out the pic posting thing yet.

great finds. Thanks for sharing

Great finds! Thanks for sharing...

It's either an 1873 or 1878 IH. I am leaning toward '73 because it looks more narrow than the first 8. Hard to tell in that pic about the last digit. Can you believe that quarter was hiding that other piece? Just goes to show we have to keep going back to our sites.:coffee2:

Thanks for all the responses folks.

Blingie's "surfboard" is definitely to heavy to be a music sheet holder. It appears to be brass/bronze something. Looks like two places built into the top for holding things like a fireplace poker.

The lock? I have no clue. But, why would a lock made that well, not have ANY markings on it? Can anyone tell from the style what era it would be?

The Indian Head penny? In person it's a little easier to see, (might try to clean up a bit), but it appears to me to be an 1873 - closed '3' version. Now, I find that sort of funny. Not just the penny, which is rare enough to find any IH, but how is it that I find, after all these years, one that is so rare in it's own right? Just look at how many other IH's it could have been. How did it come to be that I would be digging up this particular one? LOL Strange!

What a WONDERFUL hobby!! :)

I agree, looks like 1873. Nice lock also.

Awesome finds. I agree about what is different each time you go out. I only have a bounty hunter iv. But the more I use it the more I realize the shortcomings I try to blame on the machine are usually my lack of experience. Can't wait to get off this afternoon and dig.

Loving those locks for some reason.

Loving those locks for some reason.

Yeah I do too. The padlock especially. It was between two giant trees and really deep. I wish I knew more about them. It must be pretty old! And in wonderful condition for it's age!

Thanks!

Nice digs !!!!

I like the lock best...I think they are so cool ...........for whatever reason I just do.

Congrats..nice IH

With a great big thanks to nhbenz over on the What Is It forum! The lock has been positively identified!

Funny thing. I looked it up. Seemed a bit on the common side of the world. But, a friend just offered me a pretty fair offer for it already! LOL I declined. It's in my collection now. :)

As an aside, the indian head cleaned up a bit more and was indeed an 1873 "closed three". He also wanted to buy that one. LOL
