Hello All,

The Iron Brigade has been digging lots of holes recently in the ice and snow here. I met up with the buddies today and got a bit of a late start on my hunt after teaching class. Now I know that the posts from myself and the other Iron Brigade diggers have been pretty darned good recently, but this was a shorter hunt (3 hours for me in the freezing temps and snow coming down). So I figure this is a bit of a reality check. :P I did manage a few interesting pieces--nothing spectacular. A flat button, an odd "key" (posted in the "What is it" threads), lantern pieces, assorted buckles, an iron stirrup, and last but not least--this change purse 8) When I first recovered the change purse, I realized what it was (perhaps by connecting on a psychic level with this relic, because it didn't look like anything I had seen before at first!) Here's a photo of it As-Dug:

I put it in a Ziploc bag because I didn't know whether there were any coins inside or not--and I didn't want to risk any further damage to the crumbling purse itself.

When I got it home, I started cleaning it simply by rinsing it with water. Small pieces had already started to come off of it, but I just wanted to get enough of the mud off to see what it looked like:

After cleaning, here's what I had. I found the tiny broken piece of the top of the purse about 15 feet away from the rest of it. Although there were no coins inside it, I really like this fragile little relic. :)

And here is a photo of the rest of the housesite relics:

Detectorists can't always make spectacular recoveries every hunt, but each shovelfull of dirt holds endless possibility.

Best Wishes,

Where'd this guy learn how to detect? :-\ :D :D ;D ;D Just Kidding Will, shoot, everyday cannot be a "10". Shoot, this day does NOT look like a bad day to me....It looks like you found some nice things in my eyes, they may not be half-dimes popping out at you in AU condition but hey........ ;D ;D Great Job my friend!! ;) ;) ;)

Oh don't worry buddy! I'm not skunked as long as I come away with at least one piece for the collection. As many nice coins and relics as the Iron Brigade (Half Dime Club??) has been diggin' recently...let's put it this way...I have high expectations for every hunt. You have to get the positive energy going on the drive to any site. But I also don't get "down and out" about my finds for the day if they aren't old silver and belt plates. I've had PLENTY of much, MUCH worse days! And plenty of ABSOLUTE SKUNKS. As anyone who tries to track down old, long-forgotten sites knows, you either get on the spot before the closing bell...or you don't. When you don't find it--you're headed for an Absolute Skunk. No coins--of any age or kind, no relics--new or old...maybe a shotgun shell or two and some iron junk. I'm not at all desensitized. I mainly just posted these to show that we can't always hit the "Perfect Ten."

Regards,

Buckleboy

Actually, it might be a clip for an old-fashioned ladies' garter belt. (The part that attaches to the stockings.)

Actually - I agree completely! :)

Sorry, I hope I didn't sound snotty. Unintentional! Just trying to help... 8)

Very nice day of finds, I would of broken the speed limit to get that purse home to clean, to see what it might hold. Shame it was empty. It would of been a nice pay off for any one to brave such weather. HH

when i was in school the janitor used to carry a key like that to turn the lights on and off with. great finds!

Hi Buckleboy:

It is way too cold up where I am out for me that is. I am envious of those guys and gals that will brave the cold and snow to do some detecting. I will just have to wait till the weather is a little more warmer for me though. Nice finds there and I like the old purse you found. ;D
