Detector(s) used
Equinox 800 SE and DFX
Well I was swinging both the dfx and the se today for an hour each... was having some fun...found a couple small pendants, a junk ring, a wheatie and then after switching to the se...everything seemed the same..clad a couple deepies...then it happened...I noticed the arm strap was missing... :o Ok I decided I am going to keep hunting...felt a little down...ok a nice hit two quarters stuck together...then it happens again! :o :icon_pale: I look down and the coil is hanging off! :-\ The hardware on the coil had come loose.... I decided not to panic...and kept detecting...just pushed screw in... just an odd day...after the coil coming loose a few times I was able to back track and find the screw on cap. Then wondering about the strap...thinking it can not be far... I was working a new area and had used the dfx half the time.... It hit me yesterday I was at a park right by the house and worked a small area... I finished up after tightening the coil screw... :laughing1: and headed to the park by my house...I was lucky enough to find it within a minute and head home...strange day... :D

Manufacturers quality control??? Or could have been just a fluke thing that happened. Glad you found the parts that came off.

You still got some finds.

No just me not checking to make sure everything is secure..... Thr strap was loose, I do not use it. The screw for the coil....I guess I should check a little more often...just was very odd....did throw me off...

If the SE is like the EX2 the strap just snaps into a slot on the cuff. Take a dab of GOOP and put it on the ends before snapping together. Let dry-problem solved
Another tip-don't try to run both machines together. You are just learning your SE and the tones are completely different than the DFX along with the swing speed. Run your SE exclusively for at least 100 hours before you start switching back and forth or you will never really realize the full potential of the SE

Thanks for the tips... I am not big on strapping my arm in so I am just going to put the strap away for now...may use it down the road. I know several people have mentioned using just one detector or the other, but I really enjoy using both. I am learning the tones on the se...and with the 8" Minelab coil on, having next to no problem pinpointing. Right now I use the dfx to quickly add to my totals and spent the rest of the time with the se. I hunt very very slowly anyways...so the slower style of the se is fine with me. Next I need to spend time setting up my discrimination patterns.... The se has been digging some deep stuff! Yesterday dug a deep shut off value! Oh it was junk...not connected.. :D I like the se and already have the coin responses down... I need to figure out some of the jewelry responses...I am using digital readouts while learning the tones...will try smartfind soon.

You can get nylon bolts and wingnuts at most hardware stores or a hobby shop that sells radio control airplanes (we hold the wings on with them - they shear in ground strikes and can save a wing). I carry a couple as spares in my car-pack. My Musky has a habit of throwing them.

Funny thing is when you have a spare the original sticks tight. :icon_scratch:

Thanks sounds like a great tip! :)

Man, that was a strange day for you. Neither has happened to me, and I've put in well over a 1000 hours last year with my SE. I don't use the strap either, but I keep it attached to the detector.

I know you say you enjoy using both the DFX and the SE. I think it is most important to enjoy oneself when out detecting. Finding treasure is icing on the cake, IMHO.

Continuing to use your DFX will most definitely delay your ability to master the SE. As people have stated earlier, they are two separate machines. I use to be a very avid table tennis player, in addition to tennis player. I enjoyed both sports, however playing table tennis did not help my tennis game, nor did my tennis game get any better playing ping-pong.

If you want to get up to speed quicker with your SE, you need to spend more hours in the field with it. Or at least dedicate full detecting days with one machine. Maybe if you manage to find some real deep signals with the SE, you can mark them and later return with your DFX to see if you're able to get a signal with those marked targets. I know you detect more often than once a week. We all know that mastering anything requires lots of practice, practice, practice. I know that if I had only spent half the time out in the field with my SE last year, I would have less than half to show in my finds. I know...there's no race to improve in one's abilities...we all improve at different rates at whatever we do anyway. Passion, enjoyment, practice equates to better appreciation and abilities, even in metal detecting.

Maybe I'm just a little too impatient waiting for that day for you tell me you recovered 4-5 silvers at depths of 7-9". :icon_scratch: But I know you will some day. You will improve in time...."time" is the big question.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks Dan and Charlie... I read most of your posts and always enjoy them. Dan I was sent a video of you with goldenapples and another guy in a park. It was 17 minutes long...very enjoyable. My soil is very soft right now...so I am getting out...just not going to post finds everyday. Today I just used the se with the discrimination pretty wide open. I dug some deep signals...but they were junk...but still was fun! I hit a 65 and 66 quarter that were also both deep. Dan I think it was you that said the se could find as much clad as the dfx. I am starting to get the hang of it and love the tones. With the 8"ML coil my pinpointing is good. I am having a little trouble with the deeper targets. Also I know you said I need an inline probe...and it is starting to look that way... The se signals can be very deep...I see...

Dan, I agree with your idea about one detector a hunt or just one detector. But I do seem a little sharper if I change off for some reason. We have been steady in the 45 degree area...but for some odd reason going to get 3 inches of snow tonight I am bringing my equipment out of the car to clean up. Today my cover and coil were so dirty on the se...I was going by sound...was a test...but worked pretty good. When the sun hits I have trouble seeing screen with cover on...For now I am using digital but will try smartfind within a week or two. Weather should shoot into 50's next week... I am hitting new areas now... Also one older park that I was using dfx at... where I found most of my silver coins last year and the only one I have this year up to now with se, thanks again...

I was MDing in a bad neighboorhood and I was about 100 yards from my car.
I saw this guy checking my car.
He then left.
As I was heading back, I saw the same guy getting into another parked car.
Before I knew, the fellow was leaving the area in a hurry.
He was searching unlocked cars.

I still MD there, but I now keep my car parked close to me.

That was my strange day.

Yes...I know what you mean...some of the areas I hunt are pretty shady.... gang members...and my favorite the drunk bums and their comments! Now that I am carrying two detectors in my trunk I keep an even closer eye on my car. The detectors were the reason I bought a car with a trunk instead of a 4 x 4! :laughing7: I had to have a trunk to keep those curious eyes out...especially when I am :walk: around and cannot see car.
