This ones going to take some thinking on.
in the meantime I’ll throw it up here, found in se Kansas soy bean field and known site, my first instinct was gun flint but then again it looks like glass, it’s got fractures throughout it if it is glass maybe minerals flowed into the cracks? Maybe it has been ran over by a tractor... if it’s not glass maybe a chalcedony does chalcedony work as a gun flint? Scraper, trade, modern, I’m not sure yet. Never found a material like this before.

I was leaning towards glass but after googling French gun flints it is definitely possible.

It’s got a big facet I thought hinted at glass but looks about right for a gun flint

Can see some of the transparency and internal fractures... not sure how it isn’t in pieces

FYI my pictures in the original post are true to the color

Every time that it was used, it was driven into a little metal pan, hard enough to spark and ignite the gunpowder in it. That could be what caused those fractures. I think it's a good one too--it's got character.

It's a gun spall, that's nothing more than a flint with the rounded edges like you have. Nice find. Best guess it was used by native Americans due to the size

I think I’m sold, great suggestion on the gun spall. I found this when I was googling gun spalls. Some pretty good info for anyone interested it’s not mine but a similar one, I think mine is French because it’s totally round

Definitely a French gunflint. Better take your metal detector to that site. Should find some lead round balls if nothing else. Nice find.

Never hurts to go back and look. It’s in a bean field, I have a bunch of round balls from all around the field but as far as the area that produces flint and stone tools it’s pretty quiet. Could be the site is deeper than my metal detector can look and I’m finding what’s been churned up from past farming.
Unfortunately It’s no till now so I’m at the mercy of a good rain to uncover things

Looks like a French Gun Flint.

Here are some French and English from northern New York State.
