Got a little bummed when every house I went to in different parts of the town had all been hunted multiple times within the last 3 weeks. Stubborn and determined as I am, I swung every house even though they were hunted hard. 2 Wheats from one, and the token from another. On the last house nothing until what I thought was toasted V Nickel surfaced. After I got home and a closer examination, it’s actually a toasted Shield Nickel!!! My first!!! Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting!!!!
After a ketchup soak details came out somewhat. The date is debatable. It’s either 1866/1869. Thanks Erik in NJ for the idea:)

Sweet...congrats!

It’s hard to tell the condition from your photos but soaking in GoJo might clean that nickel up!

Gojo?! Believe it on not ketchup works on nickels. Put some in a plastic zip-lock bag drop in the nickel. Change the ketchup a couple times after it turns dark. The mild acid works slowly but does clean the crust off; however you may not like what is underneath when cleaned. But then again on a toasted coin, not much to lose either way.

If you want speed, brush on some aluminum (not naval) jelly for a few minutes and then wash it off till you like what you see.

Congrats on your first shield!!

Thanks for the cleaning ideas. If I could just get the shield or 5 out a little more visible I’d be happy. I’ll give it a try:)

Congrats on your first Shield Nickel RJ. At least you were able to identify it, so you can scratch it off your bucket list.

Nice old coin shooting! :occasion14:

If it was an 1866 it would have rays between the stars, nice find!
