I'm using an Ace 250 and find a lot of pennies, dimes, and quarters. Any real silver has that solid 'ping" noise. Do real silver nickles sound that way, or do they all show up as a nickle on the screen with a lesser sound? Just curious. I try to dig all my sounds, but if I'm in a hot spot for wheats and dimes, I've gone right by when nickle shows up as a lot of times it's junk.

Nickels will not be silver, unless they are wartime nickels which are 40% silver. Nickels will ring up around the foil/pull tab range.

I guess what I'm saying is to dig nickels you will dig some junk.

Thanks. Learning new things about the hobby and coins every day. I always thought they were silver. :) I'll start digging more of those hits.

You are welcome. I'm fairly new myself but love old coins. The only other silver nickels are pre-1873 and are actually what were called half dimes. They will be seated or bust type. The first non silver nickels were the 1866 Shield nickel and have not contained silver since with the exception of the wartime nickel (mid 1942-1945). I have a great link to history of US coinage I will try to post for you if you would like?

You can go to littletoncoin.com. Hit the LEARN tab at the top and Helpful Guides on the left side has a lot of good info on American coinage.

I'll check that out. My 10 year old daughter has become quite the coin buff lately too. she helps me hunt and loves cleaning off what we find. I will show her the site to so she can learn right along with me.

Thanks!

They are 35% silver, not 40%.
