I have a Ace 250 and love it. I was looking at getting a new coil. The choices are 8.5"x11" DD Search Coil and a 9"x12" Search Coil. I looked at them on the Garrett website and the DD is about 40 dollars more than the 9x12. Anyone used either of these before? I couldn't find any reviews or any detailed information about the differences besides the size. Thanks for your input.

your pin pointer probably goes deeper than your detector

The 9x12 isn't too bad, I didn't notice alot of depth gain (compared to the stock coil), but when I'm hunting farm fields it allows me to cover alot more ground at a time.

I have found larger iron pieces 12-18 inches down with the 9x12. Ignore the naysayers, the 250 is a really nice machine for the price. I have had it since 2006, and it has payed for itself SEVERAL times over. (and a $2000 dollar machine isn't any better than a $200 machine if the detector is smarter than the operator, lol)

I found a 1941 half and a 54 quarter at seven inches today, with the stock coil. It just takes longer to cover the same ground with a tight pattern. I hear the sniper coil is really nice for the extremely trashy areas, but since I dig all signals and clean up the trash, I've never bothered to buy one.

I've been thinking about getting the DD coil, but only so I don't have to run such a tight pattern all the time in low trash areas. Maybe one of these days...

Sure, spend $150 in gas money to drive to Jackson From the UP. Public parks are public, after all. Remember to fill your holes, and good luck finding any silver where I've been!

I've got both the 9x12(Garrett coil) and the 10x14 Excelerator DD(After Market coil) for my Ace 250.

The 9x12 get's say 1/4~1/3 (depends on the soil make up) more depth but get's lots more search coverage over the stock 6x9.
I really don't have any complaint's on the 9x12.
It does have a little trouble on targets that are close together, so you just have to dig those signal to see what they are.

The 10x14 DD Excelerator coil I'm really diggin (it does love bottle caps tho), I really like the long narrow field of the DD coil.
It pin points great and has good depth to it, so far I am really impressed.

So far as I've had the DD coil for a little over a week I do think after using the DD I would skip the 9x12 and go right to the large DD coil if I had to buy them over again.

Hope this helps you out.

I too have both the factory 9x12 and the Excelerator coil. Personally, I use the 9x12 as my standard coil most of the time in larger areas. It's not a bad coil, but given the available options now, I think I'd just go with the factory DD coil. You'll enjoy good coverage of ground, better target seperation, and better depth than with the 9x12. The Excelerator has been a great coil, but it is heavy and will take a toll on you after a short while.

I recently asked the exact same question and it cost me $600...

I use the 9 x 12 on my 250 ( very satisfied with this set up ) and was recently going to upgrade to the "double D"...

I told myself if I am going to upgrade to the "double D" ($129.00) why not just pay the additional $170 and upgrade to a whole brand new unit (Ace 350) with the factory installed Double D coil and use the 250 as a spare or for a friend...

I then got the tax return back and told myself why not upgrade for an additional $300 that I was going to pay for the Ace 350 ($300) to begin with... and get the Garrett AT Pro...

Six hundred dollars later the AT Pro is on the way all because I wanted to upgrade my 250 coil ( that I was already completely satisfied with).

My wife recently bought me the 8.5 x 11 DD searchcoil and I am still getting used to it. I think that the stock coil found more coins then the new DD. It does go deeper then the stock coil. Once I get used to it I think it will work better than the stock coil, at least I am hoping it will.

JB63503,

I am thinking about doing the same thing. I have the same thought process, why not upgrade to the ACE 350. I wonder if I could sell the idea to my wife lol. I am trying to get her into metal detecting and then give her the 250 and that would be a great opportinuty to get the 350.

Thanks everyone for the input. Happy hunting.

I also have the 10x14 Excellerator coil on my 250. It will give you a couple extra inches and is more stable than the stock coil. It is heavy, but you get used to it.

Hey Liftloop. I have found plenty of silver with the 250. It is a capable machine and a good one to introduce someone to the hobby. The deepest coin with the 250 was around 7" which is pretty dang good for that machine. All the coins in the picture were found with the 250.

Oooo! The one you found at seven inches you must of mist on the pinpointing and you knocked it in the hole you dug or you had a supper big coil like 18 inches.I have no faith in the ace 2 fiddy, how could you find it at 7 inches when you can't turn the detector up past 3,I would by a bounty hunter first.

Liftloop,

I've never had a problem turning mine all the way up? :dontknow: Although I usually have it a couple of notches down so those super tiny pieces of foil don't set it off...

Actually, the sensitivity was at max with the 10x14 Excellerator coil.
The signal was certainly not a solid one, but enough to make me investigate and dig a plug.
