Found this ring tonight but it is missing the ring part. Appears to be solid silver and the stone ,I don't know. Looks like it might be old as it was found behind my grandmothers house which has bee there since the early 1900's. Found 2 memorial pennies and a square nail. Do they still make square nails? Also found a gear which looks like it came from a clock or ???

nice ring and that is one wierd looking stone? No they do not make sqaure nails anymore but that isnt a Square nail that looks like a railroad spike. Nice finds WTG

 cool fines like the harmonica reed cage great job

It looks like a spike but look at the ring compared to the nail. It is only about an inch long

That Ace can really find some unique stuff. I like all your finds, the ring is neat so is everything else. Keep those finds coming.

 RR

Thanks for the comments. I'm learning quickly. I just had my son show me how to use the camera. That sony 7 megapix takes some fine pictures for 170 bucks. I can see why people agree that the ace is a great little machine.

That machine has already paid for itself! Way to represent Garrett.

I have seen that kind of stone before, I will have to think about that one. I was thinking amber at first but I know I am wrong, lemme see what I can figure out on it . . .

HH, Mark

I think the only square nails still made today are horse shoe nails. Great finds, love the ring!!!!! Ace 250 strikes again!!!!!

Fun stuff CJ!

The stone on the bezel could be a decoration off leather purse or something like that...

If the sq nail is only about an inch long it could be a cobbler's nail.

That camera DOES take nice pics! I'm not real happy with my own. a Coolpix 4600.

My guess is there's plenty more good finds at Granny's house!

My guess on the stone in the ring would be "amber." There are many variations of amber and that definately looks like amber. Great finds! HH

Wow. Very nice ring. Odd looking stone. Is it amber?

Congrats on the find. Pictures are nice too. Camera does a nice job.

theres one way to tell, It could be bakelite ( spelled wrong) that was a form of hard plastic they made many years ago... If you heat up a straight pin or needle with a match or lighter and poke it on the back of the stone, if it goes into the stone its most likely bakelite... as for it being amber, I have a lot of amber, it dosent hold up well for me in rings as it gets all scratched up and cloudy looking.. if that was buried that long, I cant see it being that shiny ( amber I mean) I hope this makes sense. but I would do the heated needle test on the back end of it if ya can..either way neat find..

any chance I can see what the back of that looks like.. thanks in advance

Looks like the same age and type as mine, should be 1870-1900 timeframe. This ring of mine if very heavy silver. the newest coin from the old homesite (field now) and last time it was on maps was 1905, the oldest coin from property was 1882.
