Found this ring tonight but it is missing the ring part. Appears to be solid silver and the stone ,I don't know. Looks like it might be old as it was found behind my grandmothers house which has bee there since the early 1900's. Found 2 memorial pennies and a square nail. Do they still make square nails? Also found a gear which looks like it came from a clock or ???

I was just researching square nails today, as I'ev found a lot of them over the years.
The timeline is from 1680 to 1960.
However most we find from 2-3 inches are from 1680 to1860 and some
"Clinch nails" up to 1914.
I found a lot of them in an old cabin, burned out of the 2-3 inch type, meaning the cabin might have been made before 1860. Cal gold rush days still going on then !
Hope this helps you. That nail is a little to thick and is more of a spick type.
might be a cobblers nail at that !
Not used for house building.

theres one way to tell, It could be bakelite ( spelled wrong) that was a form of hard plastic they made many years ago... If you heat up a straight pin or needle with a match or lighter and poke it on the back of the stone, if it goes into the stone its most likely bakelite... as for it being amber, I have a lot of amber, it dosent hold up well for me in rings as it gets all scratched up and cloudy looking.. if that was buried that long, I cant see it being that shiny ( amber I mean) I hope this makes sense. but I would do the heated needle test on the back end of it if ya can..either way neat find..

Tried it. Not plastic. Got the needle red hot and just bounced off. It's either glass or some type of stone

ok then its either glass or a type of agate... had it even been amber, it would of made a tiny hole with the hot needle... glass usually stays on the warm side when you touch it.. so I would guess its a type of agate stone... nice find crazyjarheard..

I've found some old square nails but this one is thick and strong and appears to look like it hasn't been in the ground very long. But I also found a steel mountain dew can in the same area and it had very little rust on it. I noticed that the ground where I have been finding this stuff has had a layer of pea gravel laid down underneath which probably allow for sufficient permeation of rain

look on the head of the nail and see if it has a number on it. if so, the railroad used these to mark some railroad ties. i used to walk the track as a kid and collect different numbers. never knew the significance though. they were about that size, still got em .... somewhere. may have been for dating the time the tie was laid?

Don't know what that stone is, but it sure looks pretty, kinda' like butterscotch. Yes and my favorite color is plaid too! :D I have n expensive machine but I keep pulling out my ACE 250 for light weight and ease of operation. It hasn't let me down yet.....that I know of. Good work. Monty
