I have noticed that when I swing the head about an inch off of the ground the unit seems to work ok.... but when sliding the coil on the ground every time it bumps a rock, root, plant base the unit beeps....get a false signal....anybody else have this problem?...have tried adjusting sensitivity from min to max.... to all levels as well as different modes.... is this just an annoying quirk?

I've noticed on mine when I am pinpointing it does that if I touch the ground anywhere within 8" or so of the target. I have to be really careful not to touch the ground or it gives me a full signal as if the target is just below.

when you disrupt the magnetic field by bumping things, it will send a false signal

I think the acer 250 is a piece of junk.....none of the other metal detectors I own give a false signal when the head gets bumped...I think it is time to get rid of it....it is a low quality TOY compared to the other units......Well either way these false signals seam to be inherent with the unit.......I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE UNIT TO ANYBODY......BUY something else.....I am glad I purchased other units to swing.....they are much more reliable......and Garrett can't seam to tune the unit right. ....its been back and forth....for new heads twice.....just tired of the BS.

This is an electronic instrument and very good for the money. This has features that many others don't have at this price point. Other units that may not beep when you bang the ground may not be as sensitive. Lighten up or get a new hobby like golf where you can bang the ground all you want. LOL.

everybody is entitled to their opinion. however, there are a lot of people out there that the Ace 250 and love them.
just because you don't like yours, doesn't mean anything to those that like them.
I'm not a big supporter of Garrett, so I'm not hawking their products. the fact still remains, it's not a toy,
it's an excellent, turn on and go machine, with decent depth and features.
how long have you owned your 250 ?
I've had my DFX for almost 2 years and I still don't understand it completely. It takes time
to feel comfortable with a new machine

bounty hunters beep when ground bumped too.

their coils supposed to be swung about 1 inch over the top of the ground --in a flat even side to side swing -- not beat and banged into the soil --it takes time to get the hang of it , so that you do it correctly --- however metal detecting requires that one have patience .

I have been swinging metal detectors for well over 25 yrs....heck I even have my very first bare bones basic unit I got back in the early 70's,.....and it still works fine.....needless to say......I have a acer 250 for sale.....if any body is interested....let me know.....yes the garrett still pings when it touches the ground even gently gliding grass under the head it beeps randomly......maybe I have a LEMON......either way.....I still feel it is junk.....a total waist of money.....

if you're having that much problem with false signals when you bump the coil, I'd say the coil needs to be replaced
somethings not right, it shouldn't be that bad

that does sound odd . -- have a 250 and did have a bad coil once on one.

it's not unheard of, just doesn't happen very often

I sent the unit to Garrett about a year ago......I mailed it off in the original box three weeks later Garrett mailed the unit back to me in a bubble pack envelope.....without my original box.....I tried the unit.....it still did not work.....(if you swung the unit next to a metal object in hand......nothing.....not even a beep)....after looking over the unit I noticed it still had the same head coil, I called Garrett and asked for the person who worked on the unit.....apparently they said it was over looked and just mailed back to me as is......WTF ???....you call that service.....at the time I was able to determine that I had a bad head....no matter what I did the unit just never worked right, so I called and told Garrett what happened......about 3 weeks later a new coil/head arrived in the mail.....I installed the new head on the unit.......and still get ghost readings......it says that there is something under the head when it beeps, I check the same spot with my other units and they show nothing.....no beep no noise....???? I have wasted so much time digging false signals, I started carrying a second detector to verify good signals.....finally just got tired if carrying two units.......this is why I say this acer 250 is junk......a total basket case.....a very frustrating toy......I know of cheaper units that have given me less headaches and worked better.....I bought the acer because of the options it offered for the price.....you get what you pay for.....for now the Garrett is in the closet for ever or until Garret can resolve the issue....so far Garrett has no comment....Like I said a total waist of money...

I would get a hold of someone at Garrett and request a new undamaged machine to yours, which is defective.
you have the proof to request it

You might soon get a message from Garrett as I emailed them for help in this matter. It is unexceptable of the customer service you are getting. I'd expect this from FT, but not Garrett.

Good Luck,
Sandman

Kudos to you Sandman

Ok, gotta put my 1 1/2 cents in, lol Sounds like opperator error to me, sensitivity is way to hi. I have a 250 and am super pleased. The reason i said 1 1/2 cents is i found an 1803 LC and an early 1800 draped bust half cent. I also found so much more with my machine and never had falsing on me. I did when i first used it but that was from my error, not the machines. Running to much sensitivity will ALWAYS give a falser. Sorry man, take time to learn the machine before you complain about it. Youtube is great for showing you how to run the machine. Thanks :D :o

I have had my ace 250 and love it. It does beep if it is accidentally hit to something but not always. I found it to be very reliable and I keep the sensitivity down to 4 or 5, only go higher if there are no false readings. I have only been mding for 4 weeks and find the machine great for me. Maybe you just aren't an Ace 250 kind of person. I know before I bought it I read posts from over 100 people on various boards that they loved the ace 250.

I don't know anything about the 250 but some of the other coils have a Faraday shield (not sure of the spelling) inside. If this goes bad it will cause you to get a signal when you bump something. I'm not saying that is the problem with yours but it could be something like that.

I once had a Whites GM4 - you could not bump it without it falsing. Numerous coils sent back and forth - same problem. Then I found out it was common with the GMs. The suggestion was to not hit anything when nugget hunting. I thought that was the most stupid suggestion I had ever heard. I cured the problem by getting a Fisher Gold Bug 2. My minelab 4000 (and my GP Extreme)also gives a false signal every once in a while when I bump a rock in a certain way. It rarely happens, but it does happen. It happens more when I have the gain cranked way up. I cure it by turning the gain down.

I tested an Ace 250 before I puchased one. I banged it on the concrete and a few trees - had no problems. Turned the sensitivity up and went nuts just by moving it. Retuned the sensitivity to factory setting and problem resolved itself. Good luck.
