Hey folks,

Just want an opinion on a good coil to go with the SE. I'll be using the SE in old military housing areas built in the early 50s. I don't have the SE yet but should be placing an order in the next days or so unless someone out there has a close to mint setup they are willing to sell. I've been using a borrowed Whites Eagle Spectrum and can't believe the clad I'm bringing out so far. I hit a coin every three or four feet and most are about 2 or 3 inches deep. So far all clad except for a 1919 and '45 Lincoln Wheat and a 50s Jefferson Nickel (havn't cleaned that one yet to see exact date).

Anyway, being somewhat new to this, I've read a ton on coils and what each does in regards to design. Trash has been minimal with only two or three pull tabs so far and ocassional old sprinkler head tops. Would it be better to try a bigger coil to go deeper or smaller to pick out targets better. Today was really crazy as this one yard had multiple coins within inches. Any advice on a good second coil or is the stock good enough? Thanks for any advice.

Dan

Hello WL!
Sounds to me as though what you doing is doing just fine! :)
I suspect the coil you are using with the White's is 10.5?

Seriously, a smaller coil such as Excelerator's 4x7 is a great coil and one I own as well.
But, smaller means more time swinging. I recommend a smaller only when you encounter a lot of trash.

On the other hand, the 10x14 Excelerator coil is designed to go deeper and cover more ground.
I own it also; and really like it. But, do you really need to go deeper at this time? It appears most of your targets are shallow.
I have an Excelerator 18 inch round that I love to use to cover large areas such as football fields. It is vary sensitive and is capable of extreme depths. And, it is easy to swing if you keep it close to your toes. My lower back does scream when I use it but it screams a lot anyway.

Another coil many say is excellent is Coiltek's Platypus coil.
It's 8.5x11.5 or so; I have it ordered!

I'd suggest waiting until you actually take possession of your new SE, which comes standard with a 10.5 slimline. Many say bad things about this coil. IMO, another excellent product. Check out DeTector Depot. They have a sweet deal which includes SunRay's SX-1 probe and upper rod plus a bag of goodies including the handy car charger. They carry Coiltek coils also but when I ordered my Platypus, it was placed on backorder. I'd suggest you call them direct; speak to Terry. He'll give you a discount if you ask for it. Mention Ron Boyte from Trinidad, Colorado sent you. KellyCo sells the Excelerator coils. If you call them, ask to speak to Tony Paquale in Sales. Again, mention my name (I'm actually a nobody who spends way too much on his hobbies) and you may save yourself a buck or two. :)

What brand headphones are you using?
Don't skimp on them; they are as important as the brand detector IMO.

Good luck!

Weasel,
Please let me know if there is anything that I can help you with!!!
Thank you,
Kellyco Chick

Thanks Ron,

Another reason I was looking for a second coil was what I hear others talking about the stock coil (like you talked about). I have had my eyes on the detectordepot sale and might go with that. I'll be sure and mention your name. I'll let you know what I end up with.

BTW, I was looking at Sunray headphones. Also thought about DetectorPro and Killer Bees. Sounds like all three of these are great products.

 i use a platypus on my SE it's the best thing i have ever done it works alot better than the slimline 1050 coil.

That does sound like a nice coil since it's waterproof. Might be a good third coil someday. I'm actually working out a packeage with a dealer and pretty much settled on the Sunray 5" for my second coil. Great depth and will give me good target separation where I currently detect.

Thanks again for the advice folks.
