I would like to start metal detecting. Funds are low but I have a whites coinmaster cm4 from when i was a kid with I think original 6" ? coil. Is it of any use or a waste of time ? Can it be cheaply upgraded in any way to make it more usefull? Any advice would be helpful.

The little Coinmaster 4 was (1970's) and is a very good detector...If there is metal (coin, jewelry, pull tab etc.,) beneath where you are searching, it will tell you. It does not lie!! Unlike the one's you have mentioned ( and many others) that miss identify (all of them do) the C/M tells you when to dig, and if you dig you will find many items of junk, but you will also find hundreds of coin that others have passed up because their fancy detectors indicated junk.. Disregard all the hype; stay away from the crap you see advertised & on display in the various stores....

Lots of data, all good, so use it and have fun.
