Think of a coinstar as like a vending machine you put coins into to be counted and produce a credit for the total to be paid to you. Like all vending machines, it has a return coin slot for rejected "coins". Dipping your hand into the reject slot can reward you with 90% silver coins, foreign coins, and various coins that are too mangled to be accepted for circulation. Since 90% silver USA coins have been out of circulation for so long, the machines do not recognize them as valid money. Interestingly, the process of rejecting a coin can sometimes result in additional coins being rejected that should have passed the test. Yesterday, I found a 2022 and 2025 quarter, a 1968 dime and the 90% 1961D silver dime. All were in excellent condition.
