Man, I was about ready to quit looking for the gold and even felt kind of down when I was hunting. That is until this big golden beauty showed up. :headbang: Well, it's not the prettiest ring, but it's huge and has a purple ruby in the middle of it. I found it two days ago, but my camera was out of batteries, so I finally was able to take some pics. I was hunting a park established in the early 1900's. It's pretty scarce now on the coins, so I decided to dig just about every signal I came across. Suddenly, I got a 12-31 on the Etrac. What's the chances of this being anything good? Probably a colt 45 screw cap or something. Dug down about three inches and saw a yellow ring. Pushed the dirt through the hole and saw 14K stamped on the inside!!! :occasion14: I took it to a jeweler today and he said the stone was pretty low quality, but if it were new it would retail for $1200. Now I know I couldn't get that much for it, but it's still a pretty good hunk of gold. It weighed in at 11.7 grams. Here are the pics:

Sweet! That ruby looks to be pretty big - way over a carat, at least. Not sure how much the stone itself weighs, but that must be subtracted from the total weight before an accurate gold weight can be reached.

BTW, did jeweler indicate the size/dimensions of the ruby?

No, he didn't say. He just said it was low quality. I talked to Mudswat and he said he thought the stone was 3 to 4 grams. I would guess maybe 2, but I have no idea. Either way there's going to be alot of gold left. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks! They said it was low quality. I don't think it's scratched when you see it in person.

nice find tejas ... congrats on picking thru the trash.. jd on youtube. ( yarddigger. ) Mt. Holly Arkansas

Hi My Fellow TH'ers
Congrats on the gold ring and $1,200.00 is not chump change. You know I hear it all the time how after years of digging up trash something of value is found. Well my friends if you have a couple of buckets to separate your trash finds you will see that you can make money from all that trash. The prices being paid for scrap metal is amazing. I average around $400 to $500 a year in scrap metal that I dig out of the ground and recycle. All you TH'ers that complain about pull tabs or shotgun shell casings need to look at things with a different view. As the old saying goes when life hands you lemons, make lemonade! I search with a group of guys and they give me all their trash finds and they all go to the recycler for cash in my pocket.

You know when you get to the point that you decide it does not matter what you find but the thrill of finding something good among all the trash you have had a good day.
Happy TH'ing one and all

Well, I keep most of the brass and copper that I find, but that's it. If you want to go through all the other trash more power to you. You would be better off getting rid of the detector all together and just go looking for trash on the ground, there's plenty of it. I don't feel like the time spent messing with shotgun shell casings, pull tabs, etc is worth the effort. I don't care if anyone else does it, it's just not for me. I'm not going to lie either. I love detecting, but if I don't make a good find or two I'm disappointed.

Id'e go to another jeweler for a second opinion.

nice find :icon_thumleft:

forget the melt value, Melt is for rings to far gone. that ring is in great shape, have the stone polished and the ring buffed you will get two to three times melt

I agree. Having said that, I haven't tried to sell anything yet that I have found.
