Age of this flat button?

My buddy found this button the other day. At first I thought it was tombac, but in the pics, it looks to be flaking a little on the edges. So would that make it potentially brass? What age would you estimate it is? There are no stamps or designs on it.

Tombac buttons usually have circular grooves on the back (similar to a vinyl record). Hard to tell from your photos if that button has grooves.

My guess would be late 1700's to early 1800's.

Colonial flat button sometimes gilted late 1700s to around late 1820s when they fell out of favor...with back marks..no back marks 1780s and earlier.
Used much longer than those dates.

Here's two photos of a tombac button I found last year. Tombacs usually clean up really well. Your button might be brass.
