My worst nightmare is getting to security and them saying “this isn’t flying” which they did to me before with a metal shaft work tool on my way to Texas. I’m on hour two today alone researching. Almost wish I hadn’t booked this flight. Of ALL the stuff listed on jet blues website metal detectors was the hardest to find and least helpful. It says “the tsa agent at the gate has the final word.” To make it worse they’re barely functioning.

I took it on my carry on. No problems they had me take the control box out and set all electronics in the tub. I think they are used to seeing them. I had one second look at it that was it. Thanks for all the help I appreciate it. Now to find the goodies!!!!

I had zero problems with TSA, or the Mexican equivalent. It was in my carry on. Dave

Do you ever fly with the upper & lower shafts in carry-on.

I dislike putting luggage under but every time I fly (national or international) I've taken the control box carry-on and put the shafts under.

I put the whole detector and all my gear in a checked bag.

If the battery is integral to the device (and under a certain size) it's not a problem in a checked bag. Separate lithium batteries need to be in your carry-on.

No, and so far international flights haven't been a problem for me either. Some countries will have a problem with your detector however, so, check the laws before you travel.

I posted this recently, in answer to a question JetBlue's policy for lithium batteries:

JetBlue operates to essentially the same rules specified by TSA. Devices with installed batteries (cameras, phones, laptops etc) are permitted in both checked and carry-on luggage, but spare (uninstalled) lithium batteries and power banks must be in carry-on bags only. Batteries must not exceed 100 watt-hours (Wh), though larger ones up to 160Wh may be allowed with prior approval.

Spare batteries must be protected from short circuit (original packaging, tape over terminals, or in separate bags).

Checked Baggage: Generally prohibited for spare, loose batteries, or power banks. Devices containing batteries may be checked if completely powered off and protected from activation.

Capacity Limits:
<100 Wh: Allowed in carry-on and checked (if in device).
100–160 Wh: Max 2 spare batteries allowed with approval.
>160 Wh: Generally prohibited.

Other airlines, both US and other countries, may have different restrictions which aren't necessarily the same as those specified by TSA. It's always wise to check with the airline you're flying with. Most have details in the FAQs on their website.
