The normally dry lakes in central and southern Nevada can harbor quite a few nasty organisms. Cattlemen knew, even then, that water in any of the normally dry lakes could easily harm or kill any creature that drank it. This is in addition to the natural mineral salts that are water soluble, but still toxic to most animal life. There were, and still are, hundreds of small water pools, sometimes called tanks, that were constructed a bit downstream from springs for the use of cattle and other stock.
