All i see is a chunk of ornate metal...

Any more educated guesses than my "ornate chunk of metal" theory? I found this at an 1800s school house about 8" down. Thanks for looking!

Fancy stove pipe decoration?

Interesting find. Seeing that it was found on a site of a 100+ year school, considering they may have upgraded to a wood burning stove - I wonder if it was some kind of ornate stove pipe connector?

Crushed body of an oil lamp is my guess.
