What is the proper and safe way to dispose of live ammunition? I found an unfired bullet at about 4 inches deep. I don't know much about guns and bullets and I didn't want to keep it. I also didn't want to just throw it in the trash. Since a police officer happened to be passing by, I gave it to her and she said she'd get rid of it.

What's the safe thing to do?

Turn it over to the local bomb squad. They will dispose of it safely.

hahahaha..... Throw it in the trash. If you have a problem with that, put it back in the hole it was dug from.

always just turned mine over to local police dept they dispose of stuff like that all the time.

Pitch ammo in the trash to avoid hassle.Hand grenade...call the bomb squad.

Our local bomb techs store it until there is enough to dispose of. Hand grenades they dispose of right away.

i've got a collection of dug bullets. i keep them just like coins. they are quite safe. unless.... you bang the primer with your digger real hard. i always have several hundred in my home at any given time. i am a gun enthusiest and do alot of target shooting. if a cartridge is in wet soil for a long time, sometimes the powder will get wet but they are quite durable. if i was to get rid of them, i think my brother-in-law/state trooper would take them for me. they have their ways!

take it to the police station

i once dug an unexploaded bomb and didn`t know what to do as it was on a public footpath ( i couldnt just leave it there) so i decided to carry it back to the landowners house, of course i carried it at arms length so if it went off it wouldnt get me in the face :icon_scratch:. you can imagine her suprise and she seemed to want me to take it away as fast as i could( not in so many words though).

i put it in a field and phoned the police who asked for a discription
i told the lady it is about ten inches long and has fins at the back, but she still asked the colour( rusty i said).
the police turned up to look and ask me what i get out of this hobby and once they established i was telling the truth, they called the bomb squad. they took it and put it in thier museam as it was ww1 and quite rare apparently.

DAMN! i only found a blasting cap and bullets.

I suggest putting a drop of oil on the primer. This will over time deactivate the primer or give it to someone who reloads ammo at home.
They can put it in a bullet puller and remove the powder, making it safe.
Dont, under any circumstances try to move the bullet from the cartridge w/plyers as it could fire.
Take it to your local police dept.

Drop it in oil.The guys at the shooting club i belong to do this with the unfired round we find on the range.
Do not try and disassemble it by any means.........

i was a bad boy. i would borrow (steal) my dad's bullets and pull the lead out. i will be 54 on tues. miracles do happen! i would clamp them in a vise and pull the lead. shot shells, i would saw the end off and get the gun powder. fun to burn and make little bombs. kids, don't try this at home! leave it to the totally insane!

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like I did the right thing. Shoot! Now I'm all fired up to find more. :)

I just throw live ammo in the junk box with the rest of all the junk I find. Never worried too much about them. I have found one Parrot and two Hotchkiss shells that had to be disarmed. After the fellow in Virginia had his misfortune and a fellow in Dalton, Georgia did the same thing year before last (didn't kill himself though) I don't know anyone left who will disarm a civil war artillary shell.
