A family member amassed a very impressive collection that I thought people here would appreciate. I've been tasked with determining the value of this collection, and wanted to share some photos here and get an opinion. As you can tell from the photos, they're in nice condition. Some of the coins in the pouches seem to have some imperfections with regards to color, as though the silver has been tarnished. How would that affect value?

Here are some random silver dollars:

1904
1904 O
1888 O
1892
1879 O
1879 S
1893 O
1923

There is also some CC

1882 CC
1883 CC uncirculated.

Get hold of a blue book and go down your list of coins. Blue book will tell you what a dealer will pay. Enjoy!

Thanks, Bert! I'll look into that. This is just a small fraction of the entire collection. As someone who got into CRH this year, it's an incredible sight.

Josey,

Just a heads up on those coins.....the tarnish stains are most likely caused by the metal in the staples from the holders.

Suggest you go to a coin shop and get some plastic flips and transfer them so the condition doesn't worsen and use white cotton gloves when handling them to avoid staining from your finger prints just handle them on the rim.

Regards + HH

Thanks for the tip, Bill, I had no idea! That's a shame, because otherwise they're in remarkable condition.

You say in NICE CONDITION, I say they are in excellent shape. If this is any indication of the rest of the collection, you are going to be busy for a LONG TIME. Good luck LUCKY.

Some paper currency, as well:

1923 silver certification, blue seal.
50 canal and banking company.
20 canal and banking company.
10 canal bank.
1876 Northern NH Railroad note?

Wow , I'd love to see some of the other coins as you have a chance to get pics posted . The Silver dollars you are showing look really
nice !

That 93-o is the best one of the lot. Scarcest by far.

Thanks, bluff. There are around 150 more that I haven't listed, so possibly some other key dates. Those I pulled randomly.

Here are some close up shots of the 1893 O:

Sorry for the glare - the iPhone camera isn't exactly the best device for this purpose but it's all I've got!

The one shot shows that unfortunate discolor - if not for that I think it'd be a remarkable specimen.

In light of that imperfection, and considering the overall scarcity of this particular coin like bluff pointed out, how much do you think it's worth?

For those who had coins graded, do you think it's worth getting this coin graded, and how do you think it's grade out?

Thanks!

I don't think toning hurts the value much. Some people look for and prefer coins with toning. :cat:

I had the coins looked at. For the 1893 O, he said it's an AU coin. I wonder if I should send it in to get graded or sell it as is.

Send it in to get graded. I just took one in this week not nearly as nice as yours, probably not nearly as valuable however the dealer thought it was maybe AU but then this one guy who retired from PCGS said a minimum ms 60. so we sent it in to be graded. The dealers going to send it in under his account.

Also It's cheaper if you have 5 or more. If you find a coinstore and he's a good guy they will tell you what they think about sending it in versus selling it as is. Obviously if they offer you $20 per coin they're probably not who you want to deal with!

PCGS over NGC?

I was looking at the gold membership for PCGS. Sure it's $150, but it comes with 4 complimentary gradings. I figured, in the remaining 150 morgans, there are bound to be a couple more rare gems in there. Send out the 1893 O and the best of the rest.
