Relic Hunting
While on the hunt for the new detecting spots, decided to revisit some of my last years hunting grounds. The weather is just perfect, not too cold or too hot. The nature is waking up, so I have to act fast before the farmers get out their equipment. Wasn't disappointed with the results as I managed to save the second example that I know of from the Patriotic buttons section in Albert's book. It's my second ''I Axe My Way'' button with the first being found last fall. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/555480-colonial-patriotic-button-some-18th-century-copper-coins-relics.htmlThis type still puzzles me as I can't find any other example of it other than in my collection and the book.

I might have made a mistake last year thinking it was pewter as my previous example was a bit brittle on the sides. This one is much more solid, with the original shank still attached.
And here they are side by side.

Super happy with this find. They look great together.

Other than that beauty, the week end hasn't brought anything really exceptional. Some good finds were a few British military buttons.
A partial enlisted men War of 1812 (60th Regiment of foot)

A general service button from mid 1800's

A grape shot (really like finding those)

What looks to be a colonial copper ring. Same size as a large wedding band.

A silver 1874 Canadian 5 cents

And the ''I don't have any idea'' item. The top looks silver, it's heavy and hand engraved. Not sure what it was used for.

very cool buttons and to have found two of them. The awesome and cool factor is just crazy with those. They represent another time and they hold meanings that many today don't understand. The fishscale is very awesome too, tiny silver coins are wonderful finds. I bet you were ecstatic when you realized what you had found. Banner material to me too.

Geez Aureus,

Your finds are always top notch national interest type history. My area doesn't have the same history so I'll just have to keep living vicariously so keep'em coming.

Dig

Thanks DTC. I believe your area has some rich Fur Trade history just North of where you live, also 1812 just South.

Thanks dirtlooter. I actually couldn't understand at first I have found the second one of this type. My brain just refused to process it at first (even after seing the arm with an axe). Wasn't completely sure until I came home and cleaned it.

Aureus - As this button appears in Alberts' book and appears to be very rare, you might consider reaching out to this link for information.

George Washington Inaugural Buttons

Perhaps you've already contacted this researcher, but if not, he might offer some insight on your find. He appears to be very knowledgeable.

I did. He never wrote me back.

That's true. The trick is ditching the wife and kids long enough to get out to it.

Sorry to hear that, but at least it's good to know. Won't need to waste time in the future attempting to contact a specialist who doesn't have enough courtesy to send a short reply. I heard of a similar experience by a TNet member with this same contact, but I thought that your enquiry would get a reply.

Yep. Heard some stuff as well. I'll find out about that button sooner or later, not too worried.
