Was going through some of my buttons and when I cleaned this tiny one up a anchor appeared. Any idea of age and type?

I'm no expert by a long shot, but there are a couple very similar at the link below described as 1774-1787 Royal Navy or Late Continental buttons, also cuff sized. The first is about half way down, then there's another further down the page: George Washington Inaugural Buttons ? * The Continental Navy *1748 ? 1785* The British Royal Navy *1748 ? 182518th Century French Navy Button Styles
But, I'm not the one to say that is is infact that.

Thanks. It was found up here in Nova Scotia so I'm thinking its a high chance on being a British navy one.

British for sure. Have heard them called merchant Navy which makes sense because my reference material for the standard issued buttons does not show them.

They're all the same button
I've found several and they show up up and down the eastern seaboard and in UK
Often described as merchant marines too, 1770s

Agreed, the GW connection is crap.

I've had a few, there is still some debate on them, but late 18th C Brit Merchant Navy is the one I'm happiest with.

I'm surprised only a few because I'm somewhere like 8-12. One of my first early military buttons was one.

Knowing me I have more in a container somewhere and just forgot. It's going to be fun someday to go through all the stuff I packed away. God knows what's good in there that I forget about! [emoji2]

It doesn't seem to make too much difference but I'm no-where near a port. I think its like militia (gun parts, badges etc) from this period, more turns up over seas than in our own Country.
