UPDATE (Wednesday April 30, 2008)
I added a close up picture of the more interesting finds over the last three days. There are a few more coins but I chose to not show them due to their condition. The two V Nickels both have dates but are almost impossible to see in the picture. The wheat is 1919. I apologize for the picture quality; I'm obviously not much of a photographer. :)

Well, I finally stopped at a farm I've passed up for the last year or more! It's only about 15 to 20 acres but is in an ideal location. At least I thought so. Lying beside the railroad tracks leaving Trinidad, near the Pergatory River the little field was just plowed up a week or so ago. I got there early toting my SE with 18 inch Excelerator coil. My first find was a 45 cal. 2 ringer! Shortly, I found a 1903 Indian head penny. I knew it was going to be a fun morning! I ended up with 2 Indian Heads, 3 wheats, a 32 cal. Minnie ball, one 1890 V Nickel, a buffalo nickel (it's got a date but needs cleaning). I also found a small silver religious medallion and a part of a token along with an assortment of buttons and other junk. But hey, it was fun! I may post close ups of the coins later once I let them soak in hydrogen peroxide for a little. I cleaned on the V nickel and it's still hard to see the details but they are there. I'm not sure if useing Hydrogen Peroxide was the thing to do. Oh well, too late now! :)

Thanks for looking!

You did great, wating to see the coins up close.
Thanks for sharing and good luck :icon_sunny:.

Re: And, the Field was plowed ---Well done!!!

That's one thing my area lacks, old plowed fields.
It's mostly sand around here.
You did very well i'd say!!
Having used the Excellerator coils in the past, [Maybe i'm wrong for your area?]
But my guess would be a 15" WOT would go considerably deeper and pinpoint better.
Just something to think about???
I think if you find anything of possible, serious value, I would not use the Hydrogen Peroxide.
You might consider: #1 soaking in olive oil for a few weeks and then a soft toothbrush and water running.
2nd best electrolisis watched closely-if needed. Last, a tumbler with water, laundry soap and fish tank fake pebbles.- Check it every 30 minutes.
If it appears that it could be VERY VALUABLE-DO NOTHING!
Take it to a coin or antique shop.
If they say they need to "take it out back" for something, take it back and leave! Been there, done that-switcheroo. :-(
Looks like you have an excellent spot there!
Hunt it hard, while you can!

Hello Everyone; thanks for commenting!

Chuck, thanks for you insights and tid bits of advice! I probably should have left the V nickel alone but I doubt it's worth much anyway in either before or after condition. I found another V nickel there yesterday; a 1912. I'm leaving it as is. Hey, I'm not so sure the WOT 15 incher could do any better than my EX18; it's a gofferbutt sniffer! :)

Keep on swinging!

Cool finds, GRB. I like the lighter.

I suggested the 15" WOT because back a few years ago, I owned the 15" WOT for a Minelab Sovereign I had. At the same time, I bought the 18" Excellerator and compared them. The 15" WOT beat the 18" Excellerator with ease.
Not that the Excellerator is bad, just that the WOT is better.
Just info I thought you might like? :-)

Hello GRB,

That's a lot of interesting relics you have there. Congrats!!

On your V Nickel....I clean mine with a little distilled white vinegar and salt. Dissolve a teaspoon or so of salt in a small glass cup with white vinegar. Place your nickel in for 30-60 minutes. After this, take nickel out of solution and rub a little moistened baking soda on it using your thumb and index finger of both hands. Repeat process again if necessary. Check one of my nickels out that I did this way...big improvement.

Good luck on your next hunt!!

Thanks everyone!
The last couple of days has been really tough at the field. 8 hours of swinging hasn't delivered much fruit! Yesterday, all I found was rifle brass, bullets and one 1912 V Nickel and an assortment of junk. Today was even worse; no coins at all and not much else either. I guess I got lucky my first two days, hitting the lucky spot. Today I found what appeared to be a bent silver dollar but it turned out to be a circle of lead! I have no clue why someone would spend their time making such a thing. :(

Chuck!
I bought the Platypus coil made by Coiltek a month or so ago. I really like it but it's no deeper than my Slimline 10.5. In fact, maybe less but it pinpoints better and appears more stable. If I ever find one of the 15 inch Wots I can afford, I may try one of them too. I like coils! Lol!

Hello Captain Silver SE! :)
Thanks for looking!
And, mighty big thanks for the nickel cleaning advice! I'm giving it a go as I type!
Wow, looking at your nickel that's a big difference! I like bright, not rusty! :)

Serious question...do you think it could be that the ground has dried some after being tilled and that is effecting the signals the machine is giving off? Is moisture that big a factor?

Now I would love to see close ups of the coins AND buttons, please?

Actually, yes. Dry soil will lose you an inch and loose soil another inch.
If the soil around the target becomes broken up, it will remove the halo effect.
Moist soil carries better than dry too.
Maybe if it rains, it will settle the targets back in some and also give GRB that extra depth that comes with the moist soil.
So, if those conditions take place, it may be a whole new ballgame all over again?
