Great finds mate and a great id Colin , you beat me by a few minutes. I didn't have the books for that one, so I had to search UKDFD and only found brooches in that style :laughing7:

Thanks SS, you are super quick! What is a Chatelaine? Sounds French. Where would the strap fitting be used (I guess on a horse?).

Yes Shaun, been here for almost two weeks, going back Friday. Have enjoyed the English country side very much this year, our 15th year. Every year short pants on while searching, this year then only indoors. And it was much fun chasing our caps this year, really enjoyed being blown down and running. Maybe you will find a few of those plastic sacks this year when the wind dies down, you my keep them. I must remember not to open up the bag with the sacks outside. We here did not really have any rain when we searched, so that was not too bad, but way too cold!

How you making out?

Here another find...

The bell has a T on it, and the initials S C (the S is backwards!)
and has still the ringer in it, my best bell yet.

Chatelaine is just the style of Brooch , the actual meaning is The mistress of a castle, or Clothing & Fashion) a chain or clasp worn at the waist by women in the 16th to the 19th centuries, with handkerchief, keys, etc., attached
3. (Clothing, Personal Arts & Crafts / Jewellery) a decorative pendant worn on the lapel, but dates back way before then, Roman Chatelaine Brooches sometimes had bars beneath, were cosmetic tools like ear scoops and tweezers were hung

Thanks again SS, now I even know that. Have seen the ear scoops before, but never found one.

What a chafe is I don't know but will be told I am sure....

It went on the end of a sword scabbard to stop the blade poking out the leather, although that Saxon version (very rare) looks more decorative :headbang: Similar in style to some stirrup mounts of the same period - circa 1000AD :icon_thumright:

Congrats & welcome back :hello:

Thanks for the information Cru, I would have not thought that the chape was strong enought for that. Do you mean the one I found on Google (very rare)? Well I have never been away, only just not had the time to play very much on the site. Do visit every once in a while. Always think next month I will have more time..... bah, retired life is HARD!
