Found this button down about 10 inches in the yard of an early 1800's home. It appears to be brass and has a sailor on it with two anchors (he lost his head during his stay in the dirt). It is about teh size of a silver dollar. Navy button or???

Back isn;t brass and is all rusted, so can;t see if there is a backmark, there is a small loop however.

A very similar button appears in Hughes & Lester's The Big Book of Buttons, but instead of a border of waves, as on yours, theirs has a rope border. It's attributed as follows: "SAILOR BOY AND ANCHORS. Stamped, pierced, and tinted brass, over a black painted metal background; two piece with wire shank."
