This is the thingy that I found in my grandpa's house in Hungary about 15 years ago. I thought it was cool, but have no idea as to what it is. I think it may have been used to paint colored patterns onto a whitewashed wall. the parts on top rotate individually and are made of very sturdy plasticky pieces. the one that is sideways shows parts that broke off. Thanks Pat

What you have there is a CHECK ROLLER for applying check grain when woodgraining. I'm a faux painter by trade and recognized it right away. IF you look at oak you will see a fine grain behind the heart grain which is what this device is used for.

I thought about a fake finish with paint but didn't think they did fake finishes until today. But I never thought about using it on wood. Great thanks. I don't think it would be used for metal as the pieces "teeth" as made of plastic. You guys are great at solving mysteries!!!! :D
