I think brother john37115 and I have found a virgin. We'd hit this site for maybe 30 minutes about a month ago. Then the land owner wanted to show us another old home site on the property. Well, today John, my son Will (Little KirkTN) and I got to hit it for about 4 hours maybe. I'm very proud of Will, He plucked a very nice flat button. If you can help us date this one we'd sure appreciate it. It's got a basket weave front and the back mark is "BEST" supported by a wreath. Yea Will :o :D A little while latter I got a strong signal just bellow a quarter and I pulled out what I was almost certain was the main part of a CW carbine sling buckle. I hollered at my brother and he came over and gave a look and said "it might be" He and I both thought it looked a bit smaller than the one I found a few months ago. When He wasn't certain I stood up on my knees an ran the coil over my dirt again and Yeaaaa the cross bar and tongue's were laying right there covered up. We both knew instantly it was a sling buckle. Found a few more work buttons, a copper thimble, part of a horse bit, and a Bunch Of Iron!! John did find several Great buttons including one CW eagle button, way to go Bro. I can't wait to hit our new secret site again.

Great buckle Kirk and Great button Little Kirk we have found us a honeyhole for sure. Lets back there with a quickness.

The button probably said 'Best Colour'. Colour being under the bent shank. Meant it was guilt at one stage.

thanks Cman, I'm not seeing any writing on the sling buckle I've tried to stare something on it. I thought there might be a very faint bit of writing but I think its just sposts where the patina has come off here and there.
I have noticed this buckle is a good bit lighter weight than the first sling buckle I found. What's the difference between, a union sling and a confederate sling buckle?

I've found two sling buckles now, and we are meeting again out behind Andrew Jackson's old house, We have to wait until after dark and give the guard dogs hamburger with sleeping pills first. :icon_jokercolor:

Nice finds!

That most certainly IS a carbine sling buckle.  I've dug some flat buttons with checkerboard or basket-weave designs and the like on them.  I don't know if it's possible to narrow them down in terms of age...I think "first half of the 19th century" is about as close as you could get.  By the way, that iron knife could be CW! I feel pretty certain it is a butter knife.  I've fond identical ones in CW campsites before.  Hold on and I'll dig one out and post a photo...

Hey thanks BB, I hadn't thought about the knife being CW, I tried to bend the handle just a bit before the pic and part of it snapped off. :-[ I won't be doin' that again.

SWEET LOOKING RELICS KIRK, I LOVE THE BUTTON. I CAN GET A NUFF OF THOSE.............GREAT JOB
