Another Good Reason To Take Insitus

I found a fully grooved axe last week with a damaged bit. When I got home and looked at the insitu picture I realized that the rock in front of the axe had a chance of being the missing piece. After tracing the shape and reversing it into place on my tv screen I was feeling pretty good about it being a match. So today I went back to the spot and sure enough it was the missing piece. Glad I took an insitu because I never would have made this connection. There's a big difference in the patina so I figure it's a pretty old break.

I took some new pics of the complete piece with the piece lightly in place, it fits pretty snug but I don't want to damage it anymore because the material is kind of brittle. There is a gap, or smaller piece missing and I was wondering how you all would go about fixing / restoring this? Would you leave the gap as it is or fill it in with something? Appreciate any opinions or suggestions on this.

Yeah I think the excitement from finding an axe threw my concentration for awhile. I study my insitu pics pretty thoroughly , zoom in on anything that looks worked. I've found a few artifacts from insitus of other pieces. Thanks

That is a great story, I never have been lucky enough to find the missing piece to something that was broken. As far as restoring it that is a tough call. The axe look's like it is made from a sandstone type material you could put the missing piece back in place and for filling the crack you might try finding a stone with the same grainy type material and grinding a bit up with some white type glue Elmer's or Sobo glue something that would break down with water and make a paste of the rock dust and glue and fill the crack that way.

Great story. Being an artist I see loads of old paintings that have been restored. I hate to say it but when I see the restored painting, I only notice that it looks fishy. No longer is the artists hand what I notice...but it's repair. My (worthless) opinion is to leave it like it is. It earned that damage. Would one shine an old penny? Could you figure out a way to display it together with the insitu? It is a cool story.

I have no experience with a lot of artifact repairs. I leave it to you experts.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions flintdigger, great idea on the rock paste. The material is an odd choice for a heavy use tool imo. It's somewhat brittle or limestone like.

Thank you sir, I agree with what your saying. I think a professional restoration might make a difference but I'm not sure the piece is worth the effort. Like you I have no experience with repairs or restoration either. I do appreciate a fellow artists opinion.

Thanks tree, I was wondering the same about the break. I think our rain is on the way. We're supposed to have three or four days of it, plus cool temperatures...primo hunting conditions. Hopefully your field gets a good downpour or three on it. Good luck man.
