Pictured is part of wha?

It's extremely thin brass and only 1 1/8" across. My hunting partner found one exactly like it but with very little more additional material to the bottom containing some design work... My only guess is that it is part of some type of equipment or uniform accouterment.

This piece is Indian War era... any ideas?

I am simply not an expert just guessing. Not sure of the measurements but sort of reminds me of the top of a hat pin that I found at Ft. Sedwick Co. Perhaps too large? If you go to an enlargement of the photo below notice the similar rim around the inside.

This is the symbol of the Union infantry (Military Bugle) during the Civil War and part of the Indian Wars. It was worn on top of a soldiers kepi/hat. About 1876 the symbol changed from the military bugle to crossed muskets, which the infantry wears today
