found this huge heavy thick coin like object. I t has the same design on both sides that says GASA VIELA. It also has a hole that goes though the middle [top to bottom] Has a brown copper like finish with a casting seam around the outer edge. weighs a whopping 25 grams or 7/8 oz. What is this thing? photo with folded dime is for scale

I think it may be "Casa Vieja". "Old House" in Spanish.

A 350 year old pueblo in New Mexico that is a restaurant and wine vintner (likely)

A hotel in Guatemala (possible)

A hotel and restaurant in Mexico City (also possible)

Could be - I can't really tell if it says "casa" or "gasa".

One is house, one is gauze or wrap.

I *think* I can explain it. "Casa Vieja" is a trademark for a brand of ceiling fans. I think your coin is the weight that hangs on the end of the chain switch. To turn the fan on or make it run different speeds.

Tried to do a newspaper search and all I could get was the following. I was typing in GASA VIEJA and it was giving me results for CASA VIEJA...UGH!!!

Did find alot of folks with the last name of GASA...infact, it was Biuku Gasa, an allied scout, who found the then Lt. John F. Kennedy and his men on the tiny island of Nusa Olasava in 1943. It was Gasa and another villager, Jone Kare, who guided the US PT Boat through the reefs by torchlight to their rescue.

But other than that....can't find any reference to GASA VIEJA and it does look like a "G" to me and not a "C"....

Hope someone can find the answer for you!

The fan string weight idea is an interesting thought.

Just to add - gasa vieja can also be translated to "old cloth" (like fabric).

I think the ceiling light or fan is the most likely answer. That would explain the large hole though the center. Case closed. Thanks everybody
