I was hunting an old school this evening. I found a bunch of clad and one thing about 7 inches down that I am having a tough time explaining. See for yourselves.

Nice 3 ringer. Where are you in Montana? I am going to be traveling to Great Falls for 3 weeks soon and gave been looking for someone to swing with.

I am in Missoula. Lemme know if you are around. Even if I can't, I know a couple guys who might be able to go.

dropped, unfired. Sweet find.

Is that type of bullet thought to be Civil War? If so, do you think some kid just brought it to school for show and tell and lost it?

That is certainly unreal. civil war three ringer in Montana could be a first there.Great find you have there. Those big babies are really fun to dig.

I am honestly not sure. I believe it to be civil war era. That was approximately 100 years before Montana was Montana :). That is why I am a bit perplexed.

Well , Not so fast Vizzio - Montana was incorporated as a territory of the United States in 1864 - and became a state in 1889 .
(The Civil War was 1861- 1865) - While there may have been no Civil War battles fought in Montana , It is not a stretch at all
to imagine any number of soldiers some years later being employed in the numerous Indian Wars and skirmishes that were
widespread throughout the territory . These men would certainly have carried whatever ammunition they had access to
including the "3 ringers" . Civil War period general service (eagle ) buttons are found in Montana for similar reasons .

Thanks for the info argenium. Good work :)

is it solid or hollow?

very cool, on my bucket list!

Darn kids bring them weapons to school....What's this world coming to. lol Nice Find!

It's solid Lead... very heavy.

I found all this stuff in Montana, including the three ringers you see pictured. There were lots of military posts in the 1860s and 70s that were using Civil War era equipment. You bullet looks a bit odd to me. What are the dimensions and is the base hollow??

I will get you the dimensions, but the base is solid maybe slightly concave...

I think I see "reeds" in the groves, if so the bullet would be post Civil War

Definitely reeds in there, I can also see a seam. That makes more sense, still pretty old for an area that was settled in the 1870s... sounds like it was early in the area history :)
