Antique silver ring

I found this ring along the ohio river bank and have a feeling it may be an older ring. It is stamped "sterling" on the inside and has the numbers 668 or 899 on the outside depending on how you read it.

Cool ring. It might be a significant old ring. Any more info on the find to help with the ID? What part (in general) of the Ohio? Did you find it on the surface or dug it metal detecting? Congrats!

Cool. Looks more like 899 to me because of the apparent shape of the 8 in the picture, top circle appears to be smaller than bottom circle. Is it man sized? Possibly something like a Fire Dept station number or the like? Boy Scout troop?

Highway 668 is in Ohio...

I found it metal detecting in West Virginia. I thought that i could be "1899" too but on closer inspection, there is not a 1. if the numbers line up with the "sterling stamp on the inside it should say 899.

I believe it is a class ring from 1899

The distance from the artistic bracket “<” on the left side before the 8 is longer then the distance from the artistic bracket “>” on the right side after the 9

It must be equidistant. This leads me to believe that there is a “1” which has been rubbed off in the empty space to the left of the 8

Look carefully and see if you can observe a faded out 1
