Any advice for a Cali newbie?

Live in Southern California and have had some success at the beach. My question is where is the best place to detect? Near the waters edge? In the water? I have a Garrett AT Pro and it seems to do pretty good in wet sand but I still get some false readings in really wet sand.

Low, slow, GRID areas at the high tide or "Towel Line." Get even lower, go even slower, overlap your swings and keep that coil flat at the end of your swing. Your machine is not that good in the wet sand (single-frequency VLF) and is really a freshwater machine, so really hit that dry sand at the high tide mark and inland 30-feet where folks lay out their towels and blankets.

The best place to detecton the beach, other then in the surf, what I look for is:

Within 200 feet either side of a Lifeguard Tower, paths people walk or hang out, like a path from the closest restroom to either side of a Lifeguard Tower, sand around shower areas, sand around restrooms, sand around restaurants, bars, snack bars, and water toy rental areas, sand next to parking meters, dog beaches, along short block walls at the back of the beach, next to beach bike and walking paths, under piers, obscure out of the way sandy areas in the back of the beach, volleyball areas, or pretty much anywhere people congregate.

redcobra, the best time to hit the wet sand, is when mother nature has stirred up heavy seas/swells/surf/storms that erode the beach. When you get there and see eroded conditions (cut, slopes, scallop-indent formations, etc...) that are "above the norm", is the time to try the wet. Otherwise the wet can be 100% sterile with incoming sand. And then you'd be forced to work the dry sand.
