I dug some British Uniform Buttons a while ago and would like to know if any one could tell me more informatio about them. The all say "Royal Marines" on top and "Light Infantry" on the bottom. I would like to know the age of these buttons and if they are common or rare. Any value?

The Coin posted is rather worn and I believe it may be a King George III about 1800 era. Could any one please verify this for me?

The other 1929 coin was found in the same area as King George.

Thanks for your input in advance...

I found this site with a button similar to yours (not sure this will help)
http://www.vintagebuttons.net/shanks.html

Birdcage shank on a c. 1902-1952 British Royal Navy uniform button.

Found it http://www.kellybadge.co.uk/Stock/buttons_other_military.htm
Scroll almost to the bottom of the page and look for these 3 buttons....
J2O711 GS 31-28 Royal Marines Light Infantry 17mm - 1902-1923 KC Brass
J2L029 Royal Marines Light Infantry 22.5mm - Pre-1902 QVC Brass
J2E648 GS 31-28 Royal Marines Light Infantry 23mm - 1902-1923 KC Brass

I found general reference:
J2L029 Royal Marines Light Infantry 22.5mm - Pre-1902 QVC Brass £5.00

At least I know it is pre 1902

Im still looking for more info but that's all I could find for now. If I come across anything else, I'll post it

AND that site is selling them for £5.00 (almost 9.00 USD I think) so not bad for a button ;D

Since the buttons bear the name ROYAL MARINES LIGHT INFANTRY, it seems likely that they date between 1855 when they received that title, and 1862 when it was slightly altered, substituting MARINE (singular) for MARINES (plural).

The maker, Hebbert & Co. of London, was active from 1840 to 1935. They used "Ltd." in their name after 1895.

That is an interesting bit of information. Thank you for your input.
