I currently own a Whites Spectrum XLT and I am thinking of updating. I am getting ready to retire and will be able to get out more so I want the best bang for my buck. Have been told my several md'ers that the Garrett AT Pro is a great machine. A retailer is offering almost $400 in accessories along with the machine brand new for only $615. Any advice?

Lots of people have them and love them. It's a versatile machine since it can hunt in the water, and a tad lighter than your XLT.

Thanks for the feedback! Getting ready to invest and this looks like a good machine to invest in.

AT Pro is a great detector. I wouldn't trade mine. Just be sure the accessories you're being offered are something that you really need and not just junk to get you to buy (plastic diggers from China aren't really worth much).

I've been using an AT Pro since October 2012. Love it! It takes some time to really learn the machine. You can find some deep old silver too but you have to listen for faint tones that are not a solid ID (deep stuff tends to jump around a little).

I have found several gold rings but they are always in the same range as pull tabs and other trash, so you have to dig a lot of trash to find the good stuff. My AT Pro doesn't seem to eat batteries very bad either. I might put a fresh set in it once a month and that is after at least a half a dozen hunts at a minimum of 2 hours each. I always hunt in Pro and Custom modes.

Talk to Bart @ Big Boy Hobbies, he gave me a great deal on one since I was a Treasure Net forum meet with fast shipping. While you are at it get a Garrett ProPoint too, I wouldn't go hunting without mine.

Thanks, Jeremy! Just out curiosity, what part of the country are you in? I'm in Colorado and seem to have problems with high mineralization. I'm lucky to find anything much deeper than 4 to 5 inches. I really appreciate all the information. God bless you!

I am in Denver as well and have been swinging the at pro since sept 2011. I dug a clad dime over a foot deep with it in January. My deepest dime with it. The audio signal was barely there and no visual id at all on this very deep target but the high tone was there and repeatable but broken up.
Great machine but cheaply made and therefore will break but garrett's cust srvc is second to none. I've sent mine in once and they sent me a new coil another time so it has broken twice. I've got to have 2000 hours on it.The machine has NO competition at this price and abilility level. None whatsoever except the at gold.

You should be able to get a better deal than what you have stated. Call Bart at Big Boy Hobbies and I agree, get the pinpointer as well. I'll never go back to hunting without a pinpointer as it saves tons of time and keeps me from scratching my finds because I know exactly where they are.
Good luck, HH and maybe I'll see you out in the "field".

What depth do you get with the visual id? When using my Spectrum XLT, I go off a strong audio signal and can often get a depth reading of 4 to 5 inches off that. Perhaps that is why I'm not finding many older coins:BangHead:

I live in Georgia, where the soil is so full of minerals its actually red for all the rust in the ground. The AT Pro handles it with ease ...

The ground balance on the AT Pro should help with the high mineral problem. I've just bought a AT Pro and love it.

Got mine in 2012, found some great stuff got a video if you want to see. I'm not a pro, but learned it quick it bangs hard on clad don't no the dept, never measured I would say 5to 6 inch is safe depends on soil, the more harder or compact then dept is lost. Its a good machine for The money .I can usually no what I'm going to dig, If I think its a bottle cap it usually is, but certain ones will hit good.It also will find small things to. Pin points great.lifting the coil helps a lot on cans and big objects. I use it in a high emi place, and I was at the point of moving but stuck with it and pulled coins out, I didn't try to change frequency and don't no if it would of helped. All in all I like it and won't part with it.oh ye its great in rain . to say dislikes no light, eat up batteries if you use pin point a lot, which I don't use much any way.
