Other than saying it's old, going by the honing on the blade it was carried a l-o-n-g time.

i'm no expert either. i dont think they had utensils like that in civil war era. any markings on stamps on it ?

The first thing I would have to ask is, what kind of markings are on it? They have to be there (unless it is home made)
My initial thought was WW1 But whats on it? Next question is, Where did you find it?
