Found this today at a very early 1700s tavern amongst the prickers lol it measures about 2 1/4 inches wide has glass on each side and a metal frame then it also has what looks like a different metal maybe pewter?[ this tavern had rev war history ATTACH=CONFIG]1880284[/ATTACH]

Maybe a table top magnifier........?

I noticed it has what looks like two domed slotted screws still. Other two look like they rusted away.

I saw a picture one used to weight down and read maps that would be awesome could be from Washington as he used this for a few weeks as a temp headquarters or someone in the cont army hope I can find out it’s age

In my uneducated opinion, the slot in the screw looks very even, consistent and centered so machine made possibly. So couldn't be too old, just how old I can't tell you. If you can clean them up a little it might prove or disprove my opinion.

I will clean it up tomorrow the screw things do seem strange but this place was about 1730s to about 1805 they built another house across the street in about 1805 no one knows when the tavern disappeared but mostly everything I’ve found is 1730-1802 ish I did find one fatty indian cent but nothing modern

Ticndig is right, definitely a temperature meter or as DCMatt pointed out a “Motometer”.

If it is a Motometer did it have a ring that it was mounted inside? Like the fourth one in the picture desertexplorer provided.

The motometers had a nickel plated ring on the front and back screwed to a center body made of die-cast. The rings held the glass in place. If the rings are cleaned up you should see a patent date and “Boyce Motometer” stamped into them.

Looks kinda small for a motometer Guys, and there should be evidence of a base and a hole for the thermometer.
