Hi I am new, found your site while starting to find information on this item. It was found at the beach in NJ, its about 2 inches, sorry I didn't measure it but I have these pictures. It seems to be solid copper & as you can see the stone is pretty worn from being tossed around at sea. I didn't see any marking on it either, any help would be greatly appreciated.

****See below for pics, mrs.oroblanco was kind enough to size them correctly for me :icon_sunny:

Hope you don't mind.

It looks like something that would have been popular in the late 60's- early 70's. Quartz pendant set in copper that may or may not have been plated at one time. I found a similar one a few years back that has a zodiac symbol painted on the front of the stone. If I can find it i'll post a photo.

I think diggummup is right. Precious metals are the delivery system for gemstones...copper has been used for centuries for semi-precious stones. I suspect the weathered looking stone had some personal significance for the owner. Nice.

My first thought was cameo brooch/pin/pendant. Any evidence that it was carved?

The stone is a quartz nodule. They are formed when quartz material fills a small void. I find very similar stones just like it in my pasture here in Idaho.

It looks like the stone was set in a custom pendant frame. Although, I don't see the point, as the stone is pretty much worthless.

Alan is right. The stone was chosen for it's "artistic" face, it isn't worn into that pocmarked condition. And copper is used a lot these days for wire wrapping instead of silver. Just this month a article about copper wire in "Rock and Gem". I assume the wave action kept it clean, but it could have been made and lost recently.

It seems like it is quite ornate. It's definitely not on a simple bezel.

It looks like it might be a quartz nodule or - as a second guess it could also be citrine, topaz, or tourmaline.

Its hard to tell from a picture, but, its pretty, imo.

:hello: Thanks Everyone!

diggumump - that would be cool to see too

Cappy Z, Allen Idaho & Mrs O - I was thinking also that its was some personal significance for the owner since the bezel work looks quite nice & substantial too, definitely hand crafted. I didn't think that the stone looks anything special, I'd say it mostly likely is quartz of some kind. The Irish word for quartz is grian cloch, which means 'stone of the sun'.

dcmatt - I don't see any carvings but thought maybe that is why the one side is more weathered/worn down? When I get the chance I'll look with a magnifying glass.

Dig em all - ...Rose Gold, wouldn't THAT be nice!!
