Any info on this dagger hand guard?

I had originally asked in the What is it section if this was a tack hammer and several helpful posters suggested it was probably a guard on a small sword or dagger. Unfortunately there are no markings of any type. I'm guessing the material is brass. It is not magnetic and rings up as 79/80 on my AT Pro.

I know that isn't much to go on, but any information would be appreciated!

I have no info but I have to say... that is an amazing find. I'd love to know the age.

Based on the irregular placement of the hole for the base, I'd say it is an early piece.
