It might be a 38-40 for a lever-action rifle (starting mid to late 1870's I'm guessing)

Everything changes, but everything has a way of staying the same too--take .40 caliber handguns. That's precisely what the old .38 Winchester Centerfire (WCF) was. Despite the moniker, it fired a bullet of .400" diameter. As introduced in handguns its black powder loads gave a velocity of perhaps 850 to 1,000 fps depending on barrel length. Those are roughly the ballistics of today's .40 S&W pistols.

38-40WCF,introduced in 1874,discontinued in 1937. Used in Winchester model 73 rifles, model 1892's,Marlin 1894's,the Remington model 14 1/2 slide action rifle, and the Colt single action revolvers. The 38-40 cartridge has been resurrected and is now available again. People like to shoot the old guns! And the Colt S.A.A. revolvers were chambered for this cartridge until their recent demise.

There was no Remington-UMC until the merger took place in 1911. They still make cartridges with that headstamp also, so your 38-40 could be from anytime after 1911. Hope this helps. Sorry, I lost the link when I tried to paste it in, but you can do a search on remington/umc merger and get the info.

You would think so, but at the time this was the only .38 centerfire that Winchester developed. Best guess is that they didn't feel the need to add -40 so it is simply known as the .38 winchester center fire. It could get confusing with all of the .38's out there from colt, S&W, H&R, etc. You got lons, shorts, rimmed, ACP, etc. Confusing!!
