Any opinions on this painting

It needs some serious cleaning and restoration work done by a professional.

Not a 2014 painting. The brush work looks like something I seen before. Cant remember where.

given that flag on the boat, I assume it's a French painting

Nice find! It's definitely an original, old, oil painting. You call tell by the brush strokes and paint build up on it. You can also tell that the canvas had been rolled up at some point also by the crinkling in the canvas before it was stretched, or re-stretched onto a frame. I also believe the date signed on the canvas is 1914, but don't know why is wasn't signed by the painter? I most definitely wouldn't have any cleaning or restoration what so ever done on that painting until you take it to an art dealer or gallery first! Keeping it exactly the way that it is will help determine the age, origins and hopefully the artist too.

Any significance with that date and the French or maybe 1814

French flag flying, start European (most likely culprit), unless you live in Europe, it probably was a WWI or WWII bringback

Edit: The flag did change yes, but the artist has creative powers and MAY have put that in.

Edit 2: I can't find it anywhere, 1800's or 1900's oil paintings of a sailboat flying French colors, BUT the style that is was done in was wildly popular during those times.

Edit 3: Like some folks above said, go get it appraised. I would hang it if I had it, but it's good to get it checked out. Lets hope it wasn't stolen by the Nazi's and resold unbeknownst to the buyer.

Something like this:

port of Fecamp.webp

The Port of Fecamp by Jules Noel - 1858

Monet also painted some similar.

I believe the boat is a lug sail dinghy.

Great looking painting. The nails are round so I would say after 1870's. If the number is the date the best guess would be 6 September 1914

could you show the back of both the painting and the frame?

The canvas stretchers look old. I didn't expect the black. Was the back painted?
The painting looks more like egg tempera. The shine has that look Might help narrow down.
Egg tempera also lays down on canvas different that oils. You might also research the boat design. Different countries could be quite different with designs although the flag is important.

Yes it looks like someone put black something over the back of the canvas
