Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

Has anyone ever cashed in a lot of foreign change before? I only have about 10$ worth atm, but I forsee a problem trying to cash them in somewhere. Sure I could hand out a canadian quarter or dime now and then... but that still leave the 1$ and 2$ coins. I don't have any foreign currency exchange places nearby btw.

ive passed off the loonys as "one dollar cons" at mcdonalds. just ask a dumb teenager if they accept "gold dollar coins" there, and mix it in with some of the new dollar coins =]

Do you have the coins from travelling to Canada? Any relatives there? Maybe you could send them to a relative if that applies and have them swap it for you? You can easily get rid of the others in the US.

I have heard of people saving their canadian coins and calling up a coin shop up there in Canada and shipping your coins up to them and they ship you silver in exchange.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I've never checked magnets in coin counters. Perhaps this is because none of the banks around here have coin counters to begin with. What does "checking the magnet" entail? Also, do Coinstar machines have magnets that can be easily accessed?

haha, the mcdonalds one is great. :laughing9:

As to coin machines, coinstars do not have accessable magnets as they are run by a personal business compared to a bank. coinstars are left unattended at the grocery store, coin machines in banks are in sight of tellers at all times.

Thanks for the clarification! :icon_thumleft:

This is brilliant! Do you have names?

Magnets are the enigmas of CRH'ing imo. I feel like I'm thieving when I check them at banks, so I do it very sneakily. The only bank I know of where I can check the magnet is at TD banks. Thankfully there's usually a halfwall blocking teller's view. There's always 1 canadian quarter than I can never get unstuck, at multiple banks. I found my first steel penny the other day btw! Another notable coin was a 1945 canadian V nickel. It's just chrome plated steel, but it's a dodecadon shape, pretty nifty.

I'll think about those suggestions, I like the idea of shipping them back and forth if I accrue enough of them.

Hummm, short vacation to Canada would quickly take care of all the coins at once. Ha.

I never seem to have any luck with the reject trays on Coinstars. I live in the city where people will or will not pick up a coin they drop on the sidewalk. So either the store checks the machine or people just don't leave behind their stuff, or nothing they have gets rejected.

As for TD Bank, no account there so not even gonna try dumping there. How do you access the magnet? Is there a secret way to do it?

Re: Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

I thought that maybe you meant dragging a magnet through a pile of canadians, that's basically what I do, as I usually get about 50 per $500 dimes searched. The counter that I use rejects them anyway. I accumulate quite a few over the course of a year.

Re: Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

This may be a dumb suggestion but if you accumulated a lot, (and especially if most of them were free magnet finds) you may post an ad on Craigslist and see if you can sell them to someone who may be traveling to Canada soon or has family there and visits on holidays. You could sell them for a little less than face value as an incentive for someone to get them or perhaps post them as a great starter collection for a foreign coin collection. Someone may buy them for their kid to collect.

Coinstars don't have accessible magnets as someone mentioned earlier in this thread. But in TD, imagine the two-dimensional rectangle outlining the place where you drop your coins. If you grab that rectangular bin you can lift it up and totally remove it from the coin counter. Using the 6inch deep rectangular object, on the left side near the bottom there will be a small opening, maybe an inch tall. Although it's only an inch tall, it's as wide as the depth of the rectangular coin tray you removed. So slide your left hand in and pull out as many coins as you can. It's complicated if you've never seen it. I actually asked a teller where the magnet was to make sure I didn't lose any coins during my dump. I knew I didn't lose any coins, I just wanted to know where it was for future reference.

Re: Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

I got four canadian pennies today from two machines while dumping. I get lots of canadian money off the magnets. Just run my finger under the edge and feel what is there. Be careful, as I have had pins stuck there too. I also have found THREE 1943 steel pennies on the magnets THIS year - ALL in the month of August! Found one last year. That's kinda cool.

I bet I have found $15 of Canadian over time from the magnets. I use most of the coins over time. Just mix them in with american money when paying for my super big gulps and other goodies. Not the 1943 steelies though.

Re: Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

Careful doing this. One had a razor blade on it one time....caught me on the finger and went almost to the bone........obviously not worth it...got blood all over the floor...wasn't pretty. Kind of grossed out the female tellers. The guy was pretty nice though---got me a super-sized band aid....careful with these!

Re: Any other magnet checkers? I'm getting a small pile of canadian coins, what do?

Damn a pin and a razor blade mixed with change? You guys don't dump near big cities do you? I'll be sure to check for sharp objects for now on. Maybe the t3ellers put them there because they know you check. That would be pretty sadistic I hope that's not true.
