Looking to get a small coil for the SE. Its mostly for trashy areas, but i'd like one with the capabilities to get coins at least 6" deep.

Not even sure if these depths are feasible with a small coil.

Any suggestions from users of small coils?

All I have is the standard coil.

Sunray 5" Excellerator 4.5 X 7" are two that come to mind and are very good in the trashed out areas. These should get you in the 6" range. Also might want to look at the Sunray 8" coil, but I'm not sure how trashy of an area you're in, but that is another good one to have in the arsenal.

I use the Joey and it works well. There are coming in good reports of the new little SEF coil to.

I just got that 6" excellerator and the first time out I dug a couple coins at 6+ inches deep with it. Very nice coil and came highly recommended to me by some minelab pros. Kellyco has them on sale for like $110 right now.

I use and love the Minelab 7.5" coil, in fact I use this coil exclusively. It is surprisingly deep if you go slow with it.

I have the Excelerator 6" DD and it will hit dimes at 8". You won't be covering much ground though, but because it's round and not eliptical like the 4.5x7", you are not as likely to null on the trash as much either. I would say the 6" if for super dense trash... while the 4.5x7" would be better in moderate trash. Don't even think of using the 6" in moderate trash or you will just be crawling along while your buddies are scoring at a much fast rate (assuming they are covering more ground than you and not nulling out on the trash).

Thanks for you opinions. I orderd the 5" Excelerator from Kellyco for $90.00. I'll try that first. If I don't like it or have good success with it, then I'll upgrade to a better one.

PS...I'm still interested in other opinions of small coils. Please post if you would like to share success stories, or trouble stories, or other opinions on small coils for the Minelab Explorer Series. I do have the Explorer SE.

I was going to post this before but just thought, "when do I stop typing?"

The 5" excelerator coil doesn't get very good depth, and is noisy from what I've read. You can find them on eBay pretty cheap, $50.

Please let us know if the rumors are true.

Been using the ML 8 inch coil (actually 7.5) on and off since 2001 and some of my best finds have been with the ML 8 inch. Very Rugged coil and is great for tight areas in the woods, it takes a beating and keep on pingin!! Depth wise, only lose a little to the stock coil, and when comparing the depth against my son's stock coil on his CZ70, no difference, whatever he picks up, the ML8 inch also picked up................

I found a penny at 6" with the 5" excelerator coil and it sounded very good. The SE won't register a correct depth with that small coil. It said it was 8" deep. That's ok though, it worked well.
