Found about 10 inches down in a historical area. Its about an inch and a half long

What is it made of? Maybe some type of buckle or latch?

Some kind of furniture hardware, but has a cast iron appearance? Looks like something has broken off of the back side straight end. Looking forward to an ID. Interesting find.

The size and shape of it remind me of an old clothing hook with the hook broken off.
