They just tore down an 1869 house nearby and got permission to hunt today. Found some things from the late 1800s to early 1900s... and tons of recent trash.
Found this star shield. Google lens directs me to a bunch of Texas Star Bridle Martingales for sale. Doubt that it would be from the Civil War here in NE Ohio.
However, could it still be horse tack? Thanks for any advice.

Is the back lead filled?
If so it sure looks very much like this one, it has the size listed at 2" X 2 1/2", so hopefully yours is the same size.

I do believe that it's horse tack and CW soldiers were from all of the states and many I'm sure were from your area and could of easily returned home with some horse tack and maybe even the horse to go along with it.

You'd be surprised how many military finds turn up at places you'd least expect them. I can't tell you how many random military buttons/buckles I've found at places nowhere near where they were used.

The kids got ahold of them and lost them.

Not to pop the bubble, but these star & shield ornaments were still being sold through harness and saddle supply houses well into the 1950s.

Yes, and also military uniforms were practical warm pieces of clothing that probably got used until they couldn't be used anymore
