any value on a 1880 penny?

from bragging rights, up :coffee2:

looks/condition means everything.

P.S. I moved your post to coins, Because you didn't say anything
about if you Found it today & how.
or if you just got Curious Today.

All you did was ask a Question, So Coins Seems a bit more Appropriate :icon_thumright:

Condition is everything, low grade would still have some value, probably a dollar or two. Higher grade and it could be a good price.

Best I can tell from those pics, ~$5 or less

thats one fancy book you have there, thanks for the help

A friend Picked it up for me at Ollies a year or so ago

If it’s from grandma, no point in selling for a couple bucks. The only thing that I have from my mother’s mother is a 1924 Peace dollar. I carry it with me everywhere in my wallet. If your lady likes jewelry, you might have it cleaned, plated, and made into a pendant.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

Unfortunately many coins are not valuable. the ones we dig also because they have been in the ground are graded ED environmentally damaged. Though many coins that were just saved collectors are super picky one little mark or tiny tiny scratch and its worthless. The nature of coin collecting. there are many key date coins that are valuable or coins that are uncirculated. Get a coin book like Jeff pictured they are worth the cost. Tommy

Just think, pretty soon when you run out of toilet paper you'll be running to the bank for stacks of one dollar bills to use instead of the store for toilet paper. :laughing9:

This coin would sell for an average of a $1 since it is common and commonly found in this condition.

Jeff needs to just fax me a copy of his book,, i like that idea much better.. haha

The Blue book (or the red book) are really only good as price guidance, not price guides. For example, you can see from the book that your 1880 is the same value of all of the other indian head cents of that era. Now, if you had an 1877, you would see in the book that the price in all grades is substantially higher. That tells you it is time to go to a more sophisticated grader and price guide to get a "REAL" market value for that piece. Outside of that, the Books are not worth much.
