What's new

Anyone else not watching a single YouTube link for comparisons?

Other than me, that is?
I tried watching just one a few days ago. The self proclaimed expert was using very expensive detectors, screwing around with modes trying to ID a shallow target to determine if it was a ring.

Then he digs up a completely flattened soda can. Duh, I thought everyone uses the coil lifting to tell large vs tiny targets. I didn't finish it, no idea what his point was, and don't care, except spending thousands of dollars was a waste on that day

What people write about their experiences and opinions for a given detector is a lot better than some of the clips.

Well I agree as well but this part of the forum has croaked...totally pathetic if you ask me.

Also most of the brand area of this forum is all crickets now too. I am not going to candy coat it because I am guilty of posting stuff on here as well. I have also complained about the exact same thing you guys are.

As a matter of fact if you scroll to the very next page I was the last person on here who took the time to write my thoughts of my first impressions with the Nokta legend 2 and I believe it had only 2 people who cared enough to reply.

That one was posted this past July 21 2026.

The previous person who took the time to write asking about opinions between 2 units was back in May 22, 2024

What is the problem here?

Are there only 2 people here that is willing to write or ask something in the past 2 years??

It looks like it to me.

Until some of you others decide to do a some written reviews with your experiences I am afraid that is what this has come to.

I don't like it either but it keeps the forum up to date instead of just sitting here dead in the water like several other parts of this forum.

Why don't some of you write something up about a detector that you like over another machine you used to use.

It doesn't even have to be a current or new detector. It could be about an older unit you liked.

Like it or not I really feel this forum has saw better days.

And don't get me wrong guys....I really really do not want to see this part of the forum sink

You can probably scroll back on this the past 14 years or so and see I was really into this part of the forum a lot.

YouTube has done some great stuff with the hobby but at the same time has ruined parts of the hobby just like this part right here with the head to head section.

I am not trying to be a jerk or come across as an @$$ either

I want it to pick up.

Also I believe the new generation of detectorist have no interest in forums.

On other forums I visit daily a lot of the traffic has slowed way down too

That's my impression on most every type of hobby. Things have aged out. Most hobbies were made up of lots of baby boomers because it was the largest percentage of people on the planet......but many have passed away or had to give up on that hobby. Some hobbies are dead or dying, out in the real world besides just the Internet.

These older people were adults when the Internet came to be and really got into any new forum on their type of hobby. The younger people grew up seeing so many new venues for their spare time like Facebook, Instagram etc.

We older hobbiests might not wander around to find those group wherever they are now. I've been away from here a long time and I really see the difference compared to 10 years ago.

Another thing is in our hobby, look what's changed in the prior decades..if you were a school hunter for clad, playground age kids don't carry coins anymore because parents pay lunch fees online. In parks, people don't carry money as much as even 10 years ago, and these places are discouraging to hunt if you are new and just spent stupid money on a pricey unit and wonder where is the stuff

Decades ago not many were hunting in deep water at the beaches, or even in the water, but they need to so that they have a chance to find something good.

There's more people hunting dry sand than back then because there are such slim pickings at schools and parks. So the dry sand is now over hunted every day and you need to hunt in water up to your neck. Not for everyone

I am also gonna say this too about our hobby;

For better or worse however you want to view it....and if you liked them I am sorry but I did not care for that stupid show Diggers.

Until that show was aired, everyone just talked about what they found and if they cared about sharing what unit they used or not, everyone enjoyed reading their post about whatever they found and no one talked crap about what unit they used because we were all equal.....metal detectorist

There was none of this competition bull$#it ever!

No body cared what the other guy was using. Everyone got happy when they read someone's post about whatever they found.

After that show diggers came on ....all of a sudden there was even new descriptions of what something was before it was pulled out of the dirt.....ie, " I see roundness!"

What the heck does that even mean?

Anyways, shortly after that if you wasn't swinging a particular unit then everyone snubbed you or looked down on that person.

Who cares??

Well that is what brought all of this mightier than thou attitude with some of these YouTubers.

Sorry but facts are facts

And nothing chaps my @$$ more than someone talking crap about one detector while trying to cram another unit down your throat! Especially when they are not even showing how each unit compares side by side on the same targets in the ground at the same time.

Well that's why I started posting videos myself

I know for a fact some of these influencers are full of themselves and not showing both units on equal ground side by side regardless if one has more settings or not.

This all started from the competitive attitude portrayed from that stupid tv show Diggers

Another thing that has hurt this hobby very much is the fact we no longer have regular publications like lost treasure magazines or whatever.

Man I could not wait for that thing to come in the mailbox.

People don't even read anymore. That's also drove our hobby down

People cannot even think for themselves hardly......it is a pathetic world we live in.

Naa, not really.
In my opinion, watching these videos is a complete waste of time.
For one thing, while you are out searching, you have no way of knowing whether there is something good or bad lying beneath your coil.
Even most modern detectors can only predict the type of metal involved up to a certain depth. On top of that, the object's shape also affects the reading.
And if you don't get a signal on the very first pass, what is the point of sweeping over it from other directions?
However, if you are looking to buy a different or new machine, such a video can be helpful for seeing whether features like the audio tones and the user interface suit your preferences.
The tips provided by so-called experts are usually worthless when it comes to your own real-world searching.
@3RDLIFE - Nice Fred, BTW.
And one Tip I got from Monte: "Your EYES ... the only 100% accurate form of Discrimination!" R.I.P my friend

I see a lot of activities have more action on Facecrack groups than forums. Many have adopted a hybrid of both.
I am interested in fossils, rocks, scuba, spearfishing, hunting, 4 wheelers and food.
The only thing I do that's still huge in forums is theme parks and boating.
Kudos to those posting anywhere here, useful info or just camaraderie.

With the advent of AI, that’s only going to get worse.

I do videos.
And try to be fair.
And show some really good stuff.
Real good.
Especially as of late.
Not all detector models and or coils created equal.
Some have some advantage considering certain targets, target groups.
Plain as day too.
Once you start focusing.
I am loving this Deus 2 hf2 coil.
I believe it’s an accident what it does. What I have been showing. Or maybe even better said a by product.
Don’t think the coil was engineered to necessarily do what I have been showing. But the freq used seems to be the major contributor. Can’t say for sure if the hf2 coil shape and size are contributors or not.
If I had a 9” round using same freq as hf2 coil. I could test and use and have a good solid option. This coil though right now doesn’t exist.
Hunt by numbers looking for gold rings. How about that, not so much by audio/tone.

It’s called stealth Nickle, gold, platinum, junk, pewter, tungsten, titanium ring hunting.
Which means users can leave a lot of bs in the ground for some other poor soul to have to detect and some of will be dug for potential rings.
You may not know if I have even been in a site sweeping this Deus 2 hf2 coil.
Cherry picker special!!

Cheers.

I mostly like comparison videos where the person making the video just stays out of the way and lets the detectors do the talking with a minimum amount of verbal opinions and conclusions. I have no use for above ground static test comparisons or testing in mild ground since I don’t hunt in either of those scenarios. Any conclusions drawn from those types of testing usually do not hold true where I detect. I do appreciate the information and effort those types of videos show but I rarely watch them for anything other than basic detector characteristics if a new product or one I haven’t used is being featured.
